Sometimes I suffer from insomnia, lying awake and trying to get some sleep. I tuned into Radio 3 and heard a wonderful piece of music. It was so good I found myself hoping that I would not go to sleep while listening to it et the music was relaxing. Thankfully, I remained awake to hear the whole piece. Noting the name I tried to locate a copy.

Amazon came up trumps and now I have my own copy for both sleepless nights and other times when I just want something to help clear my mind.

The first piece, Opus 40 comprises five contrasting movements, some light, others quite strong and powerful, but each weaving a well-structured sound. The highlight of the CD is Opus 60 - a gentle piece which begins quietly but soon soars in its stillness and its ability to sooth and clarify the mind.

This was Takashi's first symphony conducted by Fujioka along with his "Ode to Birds and Rainbows". Like most of his work, Takashi blends peaceful easy listening with moments of dissonance, sometimes requiring repeated listening. However, for the most part his first CD is pretty easy listening and has quite a "new age" feel to it.

For me, the main symphony is the best on offer here, with each movement having a distinct feel based on the elemental themes of ground, water, fire, air etc. For example, the first movement "Ground" has a sluggish, "muddy" feel to it, the strings climbing clumsily, slowly creeping whereas "Fire" has a much more dissonant and destructive feel remiscant of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring". Overall an immersive and varied performance.

Ode to Birds and Rainbows on the other hand is much more calm and peaceful, not too challenging and is perfect for sitting back and relaxing too. A great album from a highly underrated composer!
