Amazon.co.uk Review
The murder rate is as high as an elephant's eye in Children of the Corn, a flaccid adaptation of Stephen King's short story. While driving through Nebraska en route to a new job, medico Burt (Peter Horton) and his wife Vicky (a pre-Terminator Linda Hamilton) nearly run over a mutilated boy who staggers from the cornfields. Seeking help, they enter the town of Gatlin, whose under-20 residents have butchered their parents per the decree of junior-grade holy-roller Isaac (John Franklin), who preaches the word of a being called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows". King's original story (from his 1978 collection Night Shift) was a lean and brutal mélange of Southern-Gothic atmosphere and EC Comics-style gore, which scripter Greg Goldsmith effectively neutralises by adding a youthful narrator (a grating Robbie Kiger) and putting an upbeat spin on the story's morbid conclusion. Fritz Kiersch's direction is TV-movie flat, with the sole inspired moment (hideous religious iconography glimpsed during a bloody "service") delivered as a throwaway. Aside from Horton and Courtney Gains (as Isaac's hatchet man Malachai), the performances are dreadful. The depiction of the monster-God as a sort of giant gopher inspires more laughter than terror. Amazingly, the film spawned six sequels; Franklin (Cousin It in the Addams Family films) later appeared in and wrote 1999's Children of the Corn 666.--Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars MALAKAI HAS A RATHER LARGE MOUTH., 4 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Malakai *makes* this film [though the midget in the Amish hat does stand around doing a good job of being evil -especially when coated with dust at the end:)]. The burning fields are cinematically superb, but the bottle throwing technique of the 'hero' [in the traditional sense, the hero for me will always be the man who has his hand forced into a blender at the beginning] leaves a lot to be desired. Enjoy whilst drunk for the ultimate experience, and prepare to be brainwashed into buying the whole series...I personally can't wait for "Children of the Corn 666:Isaac's Return". Beau.

5.0 out of 5 stars And a child shall lead them!, 9 Aug 2003
As you may be able to guess this film is a personal favourite of mine. It's about a young preacher named Isaac and his sadistic executioner Malachie who arrive in a small Nebraskan town and manipulate the towns children into murdering thier parents.
Child actors usually have a tendancy to be pretty bad but I think that the kids in this do a really good job, especially John Franklin who plays Isaac, his performance as the sinister prophet is excellent, his sidekick Malachie is also well acted, he walks around with a machette slitting little kids throats and shouting OUTLANDER! he's a real nasty piece of work.
This brings me to my only complaint about this film, WHAT HAPPENED TO ISAAC AND MALACHIE??!! these two are the best characters in the film yet they just seem to disappear at the end and we never see what happens to them, okay, so maybe we find out what happened to Isaac in COTC 666 but how did he get into that coma and what became of Malachie? it just seemed weird to me that they chose not to show us. Malachie deserved a much better sendoff.
Anyway, never mind, this film is brilliant and I recommend it to all horror fans, check out the sequels aswell as they are really enjoyable (with the exception of part 5 which was below standard in my opinion) as such is the will of he who walks behind the rows. obey!

4.0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD, 12 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This movie starts 3 years before the main story when on a Sunday afternoon all the children kill the adults. 3 years later, on the heros birthday, him and his wife (played by the same girl who plays Sara Connor in T2) are moving to a different town for his new job. On the way they start going through a road by a giant cornfield they run into a boy who's throut is slit. They go into a town where they end up being chased by killer children. The man escapes and latter decides he has to save the children from 'He Who Walks Behinds The Rows'. Will he succeed? Remember there are already 5 sequels to this movie. I didn't find this movie scary but it was still worth watching. If you have already seen loads of horror movies before this then just rent it. But if you want to see a good thriller then this in my view you should buy. oh,by the way, the funniest bit in this movie is where the hero walks into a poll which isn't very funny at that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wooden acting, zero suspense and cheapo effects. Poor.
The cast is wasted in this awful adaptation of Stephen Kings novel. The acting is wooden and mediocre from the two main leads and the direction is even worse. Read more
