4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Aussie gangster flick., 6 April 2004
By R. A. Leyland (Durham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Wow, who would have guessed that Heath Ledger could act as well as this? This is a great crime caper film, much in the vein of Lock Stock or Resevoir Dogs, but with all the quirkiness of a typical Aussie flick. The story centres around Ledger, a 19-year-old who gets tangled up in a whole heap of trouble after a fairly basic job goes horribly wrong.

An on the run Ledger is brilliant as a hapless crook and the bank scene has to be seen to be believed. What's more the rest of the cast support brilliantly as your slightly more chummy Aussie gangsters, with a bit more cheerfulness and fun than in most gangster flicks. There are other brilliant moments and the whole film wreaks of being an understudy to the Tarantino classics Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, as the dark criminal issues are dealt with in a cruelly humorous way.

Overall, this is a great film to watch with friends. It's easy going and generally highly entertaining. Occasionally the film is marred by somewhat amateurish cinematics and the odd script problem. Still, a great film, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films i've seen for a long time., 17 Feb 2002
This film is excellent, i loved it. The main character is Jimmy, played by Heath Ledger. Whom i am now a great fan off, after seeing this. Jimmy has to do a simple 'job' for a local gang, but it all turns pair shaped when he loses the cash, and the gang come after him. The film is based around Jimmy trying his best to avoid them, whilst still trying to date his love interest Alex(Rose Byrne). Theres a few twists and turns along the way, and a good ending. This film shows that the Aussies are getting the act together making movies, See it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see cult Aussie movie, 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
For anyone who is a fan of Australian film, this is a great view and crowd pleaser. Typically weird in places, with some good twists and a great performance from Bryan Brown. This movie is enchanting and severe. Realistic portrayal of Sydney's seedier side with much of the action taking place in Kings Cross.

Together with a fantastic soundtrack, and all you Powderfinger fans out there will be happy, a definate must have for the cult movie shelf.
