4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly Brilliant, 1 Aug 2001
This is an EXCELLENT tool for those of us trying to boost our French vocabulary. Every word has a sound file so you can hear the correct pronunciation and there are plenty of example usages. The sound file for the entire dictionary can be loaded onto the hard drive of your PC for faster replay times(although they take up 250MB each!)

The games look a bit daft at first, but they really work, which I suppose is the main thing.

My only criticisms are that the user interface is somewhat non-standard and a bit haphazard to navigate, and the "shooting gallery" game (my favourite) could be tricky for someone who can't touch type.

Overall though, it does what it says, and it does it well. Fix the gripes and it'd be worth 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible - adj. incroyable!, 2 April 2001
By A Customer
Already a fan of the Collins English-French dictionary on my Psion Revo (EPOC), I had no doubts that the talking version would be a useful learning tool. I was wrong - it is a brilliant learning tool!

The words are found very quickly as you enter them, so you don't have to type with the speed of light as you do on the Revo. The use of colour makes it easy to pick out the relevant bits from the text and clicking on the speaker will either produce a pronounciation, or you can open the Audio-Pad. This shows a graphic display of the French speaker's voice and you can either listen to the him saying the word or record yourself and compare your pronounciation with that of the French speaker.

I am in the throes of the 1st year of three of a Diploma in French with the Open University and find the Memo-Pad invaluable. I enter all the vocabulary into a Memo-Pad, one for each chapter of the text books. Then I go into the Shooting Gallery which displays the words in English and gives you a few seconds in which to type in the responses. Points are deducted for failures and it then keeps giving you the word until it thinks you know it. The only drawback is that I haven't found a way of printing out the contents of the Memo-Pads so that they can be learned on the tube or in the smallest room!

My fellow students are obviously also impressed (judging by the number of them who wrote down the details)...

A bientot! Samantha Covington

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely cracking, 15 Nov 2002
By Ken McMullan (Northern Ireland, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Now, I may be biased, becasue all I was expecting was something where I enter a word in French/English and it translates it, but this package has games too. (Of course they only work if they are used!)
The sound files are large, so it's probably best not to install them, but in this case they can be accessed from the CD. Since the package will run fine without the CD, it is possible to have a French audio CD in the drive and do oral practice with the dictionary open. If the French sound files are required while you have a different CD inthe drive, they can be installed, but will eat up 600Mb of disk space.
Probably the most useful feature is the notepad into which can be pasted a whole passage. If the reader finds an unfamiliar word, simply clicking on it displays a definition and translation.
The only downside to the package is that it doesn't appear possible to make a custom wordlist for crosswords, but, considering that all I wanted was a dictionary, who am I to complain? (Note to the author: Could we see an update for this, maybe?)
This package may save my A/S level French - I really hate flicking through dictionaries!!
