In the three years since their last album, the Black Croweseither lost or fired band members, got sued, switched labels and saw marriages break-up. Rather than be cowered by these obstacles, the band regrouped and put out an album bristling with energy and soaked in sturdy riffs and passionate singing. With the Crowes reduced to a quintet for the recordingof BY YOUR SIDE, Rich Robinson played all lead and rhythm guitar for the first time and particularly shone on the sassyfunk of "Heavy" and the slide-happy "Kicking My Heart Around". The female back-up singers, fat guitar tone and Chris Robinson's raspy singing turned the title track into the kind of solid rock & roll that Rod Stewart used to churn out effortlessly early in his career.
Although the wah-wah drenched "HorseHead" is a heavy stomper of a song, the Crowes got wistful on "Welcome To The Goodtimes" and churned out CurtisMayfield-flavoured soul with "Go Tell The Congregation". Keyboardist Eddie Harsch remained the band's unsung hero as his liberal doses of Hammond organ and electric piano seasonedsongs such as the rollicking "Then She Said My Name" and the psychedelic-flavoured sanctity of "Virtue And Vice".

"By Your Side" is a decent rock n' roll record...not as good as theCrowes' first two records, but good enough to warrant a listen.
Unfortunately the production (or rather the mixing) is lousy. A noisy,discordant rhythm guitar with LOTS of overdrive keeps droning mindlesslyaway, threatening to drown out everything else, and resulting in a dense,muddled sound. What a difference from the excellent, lean production from"Shake Your Moneymaker".
Most of the songs are okay, though, particularly the title track, "Kickin'My Heart Around", and the loose-limbed groove of "Only A Fool".
I likedthe Crowes' first two albums a lot, particularly "Shake Your Moneymaker".Compared to those two, "By Your Side" is a disappointment, but there areenough good moments here for three stars (or maybe 2 3/4).
Mostly for dedicated Crowes fans.

The last album was good for the first few listens. This grows and keeps on getting better every time I listen. Virtue and Vice is Chris at his best vocally. They are all good - go and buy it!

After the below par outing of their last album (3 snakes and 1 charm) we see the boys from Georgia hitting back with a truly excellent rock and roll album. I bought this the day it was released last year, and was not disappointed. The great vocal talent and driving rhythmn guitar that typify the Robinson brother's sound is here in full flow, and although not featuring on this outing, the addition of new guitarist Audley Freed (formerly of now sadly folded Cry of Love)will make the Crowes' next tour/album definately something to write home about. It has taken them a while, but this is the Black Crowes back on form, showing all the other guitar bands around at the moment how it should be done.
