Product Description

CD Description

After releasing the techno industrial, Trent Reznor-influenced EARTHLING in 1997, David Bowie came back down to Earth on HOURS. And although this album has an ambient feel and contains its share of loops and programming, it is organic overall. HOURS manages to be cutting edge and personal at the same time.
"Thursday's Child", a commercial-sounding single, uses strings and synthesizers to create an atmospheric feel. Credible solo performer Holly Palmer lends her strong voice to the track. "Something in the Air" features the restrained yet effective guitar talents of Reeves Gabrels, who has previously worked with Bowie on his solo material and in TinMachine. "Survive" is a beautiful tune that features both Mellotron and an acoustic intro and ending. "If I'm Dreaming My Life" features the formidable rhythm guitar of Chris Haskett, who has given the Rollins band its metallic crunch. Thedark rocker "The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell" is also another standout track. The subdued feel of HOURS shows a classic rocker who is at ease and introspective. Not one to rest on his laurels, David Bowie continues to put out vital material.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOWIE'S BEST ALBUM IN YEARS, 17 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hours...(With Booklet) (Audio CD)
This is undoubtedly the best album I've heard in years. Bowie was my idol in the early 70's - Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust & Diamond Dogs are still my favourites of all time.

'hours' is a total tribute to early Bowie and all Bowie fans who are around 40 years old should add this CD to their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll have this on repeat play a lot!, 28 Sep 2000

Excellent return to form from Bowie and a very consistent album too. Not one duff track! This is a real welcome, after some pretty good but not consistent albums he put out during the 1990s. This album has some really superb songs - some of the best stuff he's done since his 70's heyday IMHO. I bought it a few days back and it's been in the CD player ever since, if you like Bowie do yourself a favour and buy this CD, you will NOT be disappointed! Need I say more?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ! Bowie back at his best., 1 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hours...(With Booklet) (Audio CD)
This album is packed full of melodies and hooks that grow and grow on you the more you listen. Those of us that loved the classic Bowie albums of the early seventies know that Bowie's great strength is as an imaginative and versatile songwriter. Recent albums have abandoned the melodic songwriting and have made pretty dreadful listening (e.g. Outside; Earthling). But 'hours' is a genuine return to form and deserves much more recognition than it has yet received. In general, the quieter more acoustic songs like Survive and Seven are the stronger - but the brash Pretty Things Are Going To Hell is also excellent. This album stands comparison with the very best of Bowie's work and is a real joy to hear. It's a classic. No doubt about the five stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bowie bides his time...again
First the basics. There are only about three decent songs on this album, most of which have appeared on singles, thus rendering the purchase of the album redundant. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars VERY dissapointing.
