Amazon.co.uk Review
What do you get when you invite Huey Morgan from the
Fun Lovin' Criminals to pick out his favourite tracks? What will the choice say about this beer-endorsing tough guy, or indeed his past? The first in a series of occasional compilations,
Planet Groove offers artists like Morgan the chance to unearth their influences in a way that speaks volumes about the gift of inspiration. Considering Huey's past lies on the streets of 1970s New York, a cursory glance at the tracklisting confirms what you expect. There's Barry White of course, deified in a FLC tune and here putting the Love Unlimited Orchestra through their paces on "Love Theme". The smooth soul disco of Odyssey's "Native New Yorker" naturally has a place, so too Big Apple hip-hop anthems like The Sugarhill Gang's "Passion Play" and "Microphone Fiend" from Eric B & Rakin. All good stuff, and while he duly doffs his cap to the credibility of acts like Sly & The Family Stone, Morgan has the welcome sentimentality to include more, shall we say, unorthodox contributions. ELO and ZZ Top anyone? --
