Product Description

Description
As one of the most commercially successful groups in the underground world of latter-day prog-rock, Spock's Beard did more than any other band to raise the genre's profile in the '90s. The fivesome's first effort of the 21st century finds them at the peak of their powers, and might just be their strongest recording to date. Bandleader Neal Morse shows considerable self-production skills, achieving a lush, thick sound for the band's wide array of tonal colors.
V opens withall guns blazing on the mammoth "At the End of the Day", where bright vocal harmonies, polyrhythms, and dexterous fretwork are all called into play. "Revelation" alternates between dreamy, Pink Floyd soundscapes and crunching prog-metal riffs. "All on a Sunday" is a Beatles-esque pop-rocker with shades of the Moody Blues. The closing track "The Great Nothing", clocking in at over 27 minutes, utilizes prog's time-tested suite form, moving through six discrete sections. It's the stuff prog fans' dreams are made of, as it glides from early Genesis-like sonic tapestries to crushing, angular King Crimson-ish riffs, Rush-style storytelling, and vintage Kansas power-prog maneuvers. Somehow, Spock's Beard manages to assimilate all these influences and emerge with the individual sound that propels their work throughout V.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beard is back and looking better than ever!, 10 Sep 2000
A year or so after their more commercially-minded "Day 4 Night" album, SB returns with "V". One look at the duration of the tracks and one knows that this is no continuation towards the mainstream as the first and last songs are 16 and 27 minutes respectively. Neither of these songs drag and are incredibly varied. Each musical interlude flows into the other. "At the end of the Day" has a latin flamenco section that seems to come out of nowhere, whilst "The Great Nothing" has some brilliant progressive riffs throughout.

The keyboards are the driving force of this album as usual, but all instrumentalists perform outstandingly. Neal Morse's vocals are so heartfelt and convey the emotions of the songs perfectly. When he sings "of all the pains in asses he's the worst I've had the bad taste to know", you can feel the scorn in his voice.

The shorter songs are also outstanding. "Thoughts Part II" contains brilliant harmonising and a nice progression with Violins. "All on a Sunday" would, in a perfect world, top the charts everywhere as it has that cross-over appeal that prog usually lacks, the keyboards on that song are exquisite.

Overall, everyone should buy this album as there is something to please everyone. Go on, open your mind to the Beard!

2.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing..., 20 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I bought this after seeing it recommended in the prog rock section of Amazon. It also arrived with Transatlantic from SPMTe - how different were my reactions to both albums !. Firstly I should explain that I have been brought up on a diet of Genesis (early stuff of course),Yes, Marillion and Rush so my expectations were probably way too high. The previously mentioned Transatlantic sits way up high with the rest of them but "V" simply disappoints. Although in places it has brilliant sections ,as a whole it does doesnt gel and it is the sort of album that gave a bad name to the whole prog rock genre many years ago. Prog rock well done is untouchable in music terms, but when its done bad , boy is it embarrassing to listen too and share with friends !!

Guess my expectations were too high .....

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 3 April 2001

A great album. Don't be put off by the Star Trek reference, these guys are seriously talented musicians. Neil Morse has a warm and interesting voice that carries the complex tunes very well. The songwriting is among the best in the genre with hints of Yes or Kansas from time to time while carving out a sound that is all their own. Heartily recommended.
