Amazon.co.uk Review
Light music is enjoying a renaissance on CD just now--this volume in the Hyperion 20th anniversary limited edition series spawned several successors following its first release, while, for example, both Marco Polo and ASV are serving the genre handsomely. The appeal is clear enough--wonderful melodies which show the wells of originality in tonal music are not yet dry, with bags of craftsmanship and imagination on show in the orchestrations. Several numbers on this CD are part of the national consciousness--"Calling All Workers", "The Devil's Galop", "Puffin' Billy", "Elizabethan Serenade" and more, even if the names of their composers may not leap to mind--the incomparable Eric Coates, Charles Williams, Edward White and Ronald Binge respectively. The charm and pictorial qualities of so many of these tracks (reflected in their programmatic titles) have led to their recruitment as signature tunes for all manner of radio and television programmes (now there's a guessing-game for you). Ronald Corp and his players have cornered the market as far as Hyperion is concerned--with all justice, as these affectionate, accomplished performances amply demonstrate. It takes a hard-bitten orchestral musician not to respond to tunes like these. --Andrew Green
