Amazon.co.uk Review

It is difficult now to but imagine the excitement Adrian Boult's recording of Vaughan Williams' Symphony No.6 caused in 1948. To be able to hear at will this powerful, original music from a 75-year-old composer who by all rights should have been creatively spent, was electrifying. It remains a great performance in fair mono, though since there have been other fine versions with much better stereo sound, particularly those by Vernon Handley and Bryden Thomson. Boult's recording does have the advantage of presenting Vaughan Williams' original thoughts on the scherzo--most recordings today use the revised score. The remainder of the disc comprises original 1940s recordings of Vaughan Williams' film music. Scott of the Antarctic is especially notable as the basis of the composer's Symphony No.7, "Sinfonia antartica", so this rare opportunity to hear the original material is very welcome. The same applies to the immensely stirring 49th Parallel, for although the prelude is frequently re-recorded, here is the more expansive "epilogue". The dramatic The Loves of Joanna Godden is unique to this issue and well deserves this return to the catalogue. --Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars great historical performances and rare film music, 31 Aug 2000
By A Customer
A fine disc, the performance of the greatest of Vaughan Williams's nine symphonies is worthy to stand alongside the classic Boult Decca version from the 1950's (now available on Belart). The film music is most enjoyable and it is interesting to hear the original soundtrack from "Scott of the Antarctic" to compare with the later "Sinfonia Antartica", furthermore the entirly characteristic suite from "The Loves Of Joanna Godden" is, I believe, otherwise unavailable. Allowances naturally have to be made for the age of the recordings but neverteless, this is an indispensible disc for fans of Vaughan Williams.
