John Landis is a criminally undervalued modern director. Along with such classics as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London and Trading Places, he's also made such overlooked gems as Into The Night, Innocent Blood and The Stupids (one of the most crazily inventive kids movies of recent years). Susan's Plan is Landis' first original script since American Werewolf and the film went straight to video in the UK. While flawed, there's enough screwy invention and deadpan comedy on display to mark it as the work of this auteur of anarchy. Nastassja Kinski plays Susan who makes the mistake of trying to kill off her husband with the help of a pair of bungling would-be assassins (Rob Schneider and Michael Biehn). Along the way, other weird characters such as Dan Aykroyd's morose biker and Lara Fylnn Boyle as a flighty femme fatale help complicate matters. Plot absurdities abound, especially in one jaw-dropping sequence where a series of characters in turn dream that the whole scam has gone bloodily wrong. As in Into The Night, Landis nicely captures something of the flavour of L.A. and while this type of comedy is not to everyone's taste, it reaffirms Landis as a film-maker very much in the classical mould of Preston Sturges and Frank Tashlin. Susan's Plan is definitely one of the strangest comedies to come out of America for some time, and a film that you may find grows on you...
