3.0 out of 5 stars Be patient!, 25 May 2002
By A Customer
The movie starts by explaining how the idea of breast implants developed in the 60s and by showing its uneasy transition to reality. Unfortunately, these early parts view a little too much like a bad documentary, and tend to drag on. It begins quite camp and formulaic, as the poverty struck yet good heartened doctors earn their fortune through ethics, good intentions and hard work. However, after about half way through, the film comes into its own. As the story enters the late 70s, the rosy world gives way to a rather decadent, corrupt and then painful reality. The comedy turns darker and more poignant, and later it becomes quite powerfully sad and emotive. It's not full of suspense, but the film can still surprise you. The character development, the evolution of the protagonists' attitudes and relationship with each other, is the film's real strength. The film makes you like them, love them, hate them and pity them, and by the end you really feel you know them and understand why they changed the way they did. If you can survive and forgive the repetitive, almost cheesy first half then you'll find it's worth it. The film could have done with better DVD treatment, but the original trailer is interesting enough for what it is.
