The master of orchestration won an Academy Award for this surprisingly uncloying look at the return of American soldiers after World War Two. The music is subtle and sensitive. There are layers of interwoven storytelling in the film that required distance from one another while still being unified by an individual voice, and Friedhofer provided a strings-heavy score that works completely. Numerous minor motifs follow the characters of Homer Parrish and his neighbours through the hardships of adapting to a changed world. The "main title" is over in a flash but introduces thematic material as well as sets the overall warm tone of the score. This release has been digitally remastered, bringing one of the most important film scores to CD in a definitive presentation. --Paul Tonks
