A guitarist and writer who wrote and played on classic sides by The Staple Singers, Bobby Womack, Dusty Springfield and Percy Sledge, Eddie Hinton was equally effective as a front man. Though he died in 1995, it wasn't until the posthumous release of his lost album Hard Luck Guy that the raw force of his voice became fully apparent. Labeled a white Otis Redding, Hinton was very much his own man, and the full range of his big-hearted personality can be felt on Dear Y'All, bringing together previously unreleased demos of his own songs. "Build Your Own Fire' is a joyous celebration of soulful resilience, "Dangerous Highway" is a dark southern classic and "We Got It" is testifying gospel that shows the influence of Hinton's preacher grandfather. The rest is like finding a long buried treasure trove. Deep-soul heaven. --Gavin Martin
