Amazon.co.uk Review

Reminiscences permeate the dozen diverse tracks that populate Everclear's fourth outing. The trio, spearheaded by writer/guitarist/producer Art Alexakis, looks back in myriad ways on Songs From An American Movie. Alexakis skilfully and sweetly addresses his recent divorce ("The Honeymoon Song", "Now That It's Over"), musical heroes ("Otis Redding") and childhood ("AM Radio"), frequently matching his words with suitably retro music. Although the only cover is a new-wave take on Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl", familiar musical references abound. On "AM Radio," a brief sample of "Mr. Big Shot" sets the tone for funky flashback fun, while "The Honeymoon Song" is full of Brian Wilson inflections. Alexakis references his own "Everything To Everyone" in the title track, while "Otis Redding", "Unemployed Boyfriend" and "Wonderful" are more commercial alt-rock Everclear than homage Everclear. Alexakis set out to make a pop album, and while millennial teenagers have their own definition of "pop," for 1970s' kid Alexakis, Songs From An American Movie serves as a summertime soundtrack to his thirtysomething life. --Katherine Turman

CD Description

Over its first three albums, the West Coast band Everclear provided consistent, fairly simple, breezy, catchy, modern rock with relatively few frills. On SONGS FOR AN AMERICAN MOVIE VOL. 1, the threesome, fronted by the outspoken, charismatic Art Alexakis, suddenly finds frills galore.
The albumopens on a country note with the short, soft ballad title track, before kicking into a zippy, hip-hop flavoured "Here We Go Again", replete with Chuck D samples. "AM Radio" uses Jean Knight's 1971 classic "Mr. Big Stuff" to back an infectious exploration of late night radio listening long before the advent of MTV, followed by an almost breakbeat-meets-Celtic folk re-working of Van Morrison's classic "Brown-Eyed Girl". "Unemployed Boyfriend" and leadoff single "Wonderful", reminiscent in both flavour and theme to SO MUCH FOR THE AFTERGLOW's "Father of Mine", are closest to Everclear's traditional sound, while "Otis Redding", a sweet, retro power ballad, stands out as one of the most sincere and sublimely lovelysongs the band has created. SONGS FOR AN AMERICAN MOVIE, VOL. 1 finds Everclear experimenting as much as ever with satisfying results.

5.0 out of 5 stars If They Were 21 And Looked Like 5ive, They'd Be HUGE!!, 14 April 2001
By A Customer
It's albums like this that make me realise what a sad little twisted world the music industry has become. Above all, it first needs to be pointed out that the lucky twelve tracks that lived up to the incredibly high standard needed to be chosen for inclusion on this album are a triumph of commercial genius. On every song (barring maybe The weaker Honeymoon Song), the ever apparant hook manages to knock you to the floor and then continue to kick you right in the face up until the moment it fades out. The reprieve however only lasts for seconds, because by that time, your CD player has loaded up the next rock classic, and is ready to nail you to the nearest wall. 60 minutes later, you're wondering why Everclear aren't dominating the UK airwaves, why they aren't monopolising every number 1 spot that's ever been up for grabs, and why they aren't aren't on every poster on ever teenager's wall, in every house. The answer? Record Companies don't promote talent, they sign models. If you don't buy this record, you'll never know was it is to fall in love with a round piece of plastic no bigger or less important than one of your vital organs, an experience which should never be denied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 23 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This is an amazing CD. I got into Everclear via "So Much for the Afterglow". That album has a harder edge to it than "Songs From an American Movie Pt 1 - Learning How to Smile". Fans of the harder Everclear don't fear...Songs From an American Movie Pt 2" slated for a end of year release is the harder, angsty of the Double CD set that makes up their latest release.

But back to Pt 1. This is an amazing summer rock/pop record. Every song is a hit, especially AM Radio, Now That it's over, Otis Redding and Wonderful. I would say that the obligitory one slightly duff song is Thrift Store Chair, but in such an varied and wonderful (no pun intended) track listing it's easily forgiven.

A gem of an album...everyone must own this

5.0 out of 5 stars Everclear Deliver the Goods, 11 Aug 2000
By A Customer
The previous album, So Much For the Afterglow became my fav rock cd in the run up to Y2K. It was however a piece that grew on you after several spins. Songs grabs you by the throat much sooner, and every track has it's own unique place on there. The styles are much more diverse that Afterglow, which was much more of a thrashing guitar and cynical lyrics piece. I could imagine all the US students on campus cranking it up to annoy their peers. Songs though reflects Alexis as a more nostalgic guy in his thirties, and will no doubt haul in an older generation with this release. In spite of this, there are still moments that I can imagine the kids cranking up their cd ghettos to AM Radio, Brown Eyed Girl and Wonderful (Currently doing the rounds on the radio). The album is nicely finished off with a remake of Annabella's Song (Which turned up on the Sparkel and Fade Live cd extra). All in all, a great cd. I spun this one four times end to end on it's first play. It's playing as I write this, and no doubt will be staying in the cd drawer for a long, long time. Nice one Everclear...lets have some more of you real soon... :o)
