Half of a half -hearted gig., 9 Feb 2001

So, this is it! The Beatles did perform at the Star Club and this CD proves it. However, it includes a song that was NOT performed by the Beatles - Hully Gully - and omits many that were taped on that night in 1962. Does this mean that "Volume 2" will soon be issued, or am I just being a cynic?! For completists - like myself - who have the whole show on vinyl, this is the first chance to own a CD of the Hamburg sessions. However, if you want the full set, look for the original vinyl albums. The best track of the show - "I'm gonna sit right down and cry over you" - is not on the CD. This album is really a bootleg, so do not expect high fidelity sound. A piece of history, though, from the Fab Four - and the first stage performance with the Beatles from Richard Starkey, on drums.

It would have got five stars, as the performances reflect what a great rock and roll band The Beatles were. However, the recording is bootleg quality: not really surprising as the songs were recorded by a an old reel to reel deck at the back of the club, through one mike.
John Lennon once commented that The Beatles were at their peak as a band pre-fame, and in some ways this set bears out this argument. The approach, playing and singing is almost punk, with George's guitar sounding quite loud and aggressive and Ringo (not Pete Best) bashing hell out of the drums. Chuck Berry's 'Talkin 'Bout You' is perhaps the best example, but there are others, too, like 'I Saw Her Standing There'.
There is also an enjoyable sloppiness to the music, but this adds to the atmosphere. Of course, being The Beatles, you get lots of good cover versions and stuff like Taste of Honey, in which John tells the audience to stop talking, which almost cracks Paul up! You also hear the group backing one of the Star Club waiters.
However, as well as the poor sound, the set is incomplete and misses many songs which were on the old LPs. For some silly reason, it does include 'Hully Gully', which is not by The Beatles.
Recommended for all Beatles fans, but do preview it before purchase.

Yet another version of this set, 3 May 2008
The usual suspects in terms of the track listing. Yes, there are songs missing. The best version by far is an early Japanese cd which contains all the songs. What makes this one interesting is the complete fabrication of the story in the liner notes. Not a word is true!
