Amazon.co.uk Review

An international co-production of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Australia's Channel 9 and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape is genre television at its most ambitious, inspired both by the cult appeal of Babylon 5 and the continuing success of the Star Trek franchise. Making extensive use of CGI, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry, Farscape takes a visual leap beyond previous shows. Admittedly, the basic premise may be borrowed from Buck Rogers (American astronaut catapulted to far-flung galaxy populated by strange aliens), while the crew have something of Blake's 7 about them (a motley bunch of escaped convicts pursued by a relentless foe), and ideas like the living ship are borrowed from Babylon 5, but the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it look and feel completely original. The production design is all bio-mechanical curves and the script never takes itself too seriously (fart jokes and double-entendres pop up when you least expect them). It must have been expensive to make, but it certainly looks (and sounds--in Dolby Digital 5.1) as if every penny made it to the screen. In true Buck Rogers style, Ben Browder plays leading man John Crichton as an all-American astronaut, although with a more believable sense of bewilderment; the supporting cast is a mixture of Australian and British actors, mostly disguised under heavy make-up.

Box Set 4 includes four episodes, another gallery of conceptual art, and video profiles of everyone's favourite Hynerian Dominar, Rygel, as well as a profile of Moya the living Leviathan transport ship and her pilot. The episodes are: "Durka Returns", in which the crew meet the beautiful Chiana for the first time, as well as Rygel's old tormentor, Captain Durka; "A Human Reaction", where Crichton finally gets back to Earth but with unfortunate results for the rest of Moya's crew; "Through the Looking Glass" in which the crew and Moya are thrown into a dimensional schism inhabited by a strange creature; and "A Bug's Life", in which an intelligent virus is released on the ship after an encounter with Peacekeepers. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the 5 Farscape Season 1 DVD Boxsets, 30 Nov 2000
By N. Wan "gr8mangafan" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I guess I should start off by explaining the one-line summary of this review. Each of the other 4 sets has at least one 'weaker' episode, this one does not. For set 1 it's "I,ET", set 2 you've got "Thank God it's Friday Again" and "That Old Black Magic", set 3 "Jeremiah Crichton" and set 5 "Born to be Wild". In set 4 we start off with "Durka Returns", an important episode since it introduces a new main character in Chiana and a new powerful race called the Nebari. This episode links to "PK Tech Girl" from set 2 and ties up some loose ends left in that episode. The second episode "A Human Reaction" is another important episode because it is the start of a major problem for our hero John Crichton with repecussions through the rest of the series, deep into season 2. "Through the Looking Glass" is a standalone episode but it is very well done, good performances from all the cast and great character interaction. The last episode "A Bug's Life" set things up for the season finale, with some great performances in it. This is also where the new look of season 2 starts for John Crichton.

Like I basically said at the start, this is easily the best set of Farscape episodes from season 1!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contains my favourite episode of season one., 9 Dec 2001
For any Shippers out there this is a must have addition to the collection. John and Aeryn on earth, the seeming death of a main character at the hands of humans and the continuing manipulation of John's mind. I would buy this DVD for A Human Reaction on its own, but I also think the other episodes are excellent. Adding Chiana to the cast was a stoke of genius, even though at first I didn't like her.
For all round high jinks and wonderful casting you can not beat this program.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good show, but no way on par with Babylon 5, 17 Nov 2000
By A Customer
It's a good show and it looks great on DVD. If you liked watching it on TV, you will not be disappointed. However many reviews try to draw some comparison to Babylon 5. Even on the cover of volume 1.6 there is a quote from Total DVD, "Hottest sci-fi series to hit TV since Babylon 5".

I'm sorry, I love the show, but it's no Babylon5!
