Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This pair of albums, originally released in 1980 and 1985, make for peculiar bedfellows. Keepin' The Summer Alive, from the title down, is a perceptibly strained attempt to keep the band more or less together. The famous harmonies are present and correct--most notably on an incongruously sweet cover of Chuck Berry's "School Day"--but they are carrying some hopelessly weak material. The Beach Boys also betrays its intent in the title: galvanised by the 1983 death of original member Dennis Wilson, this was an attempt to recapture the heights once commanded by the Brian Wilson-led version of the band. It's a partial success, thanks mostly to Brian Wilson's input (though three of his tracks were co-written with his psychiatrist) and might have been even better without the horribly dated 1980s keyboards and drum sounds--the musical equivalent of the rolled-up suit jacket sleeves the band sport on the cover. --Andrew Mueller

CD Description

The first Beach Boys album of the 1980s, KEEPIN' THE SUMMERALIVE has a troubled background: though Brian Wilson was again at the helm, the band's presiding genius was in a fragile mental state, and was soon replaced by Bruce Johnston. Apart from the perky title track and the Brian Wilson-produced version of Chuck Berry's "School Days", highlights here are the regretful "Endless Harmony" and the retro "Goin' On". With synthesizers and exotic drum machines predominating, THE BEACH BOYS '85 is very much of its time, though "Getcha Back" hints at past glories and the harmonies are reliably gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keepin' The Summer Alive/The Beach Boys, 29 Jun 2003
This double album took me a while to get into - because most of the music I was hearing was not what I expected of the Beach Boys. However after a while - it grew on me to the extent of which this "two-fer" has become possibly my favourite Beach Boys CD. Including such wrongly under-rated songs as "Goin' On", "Male Ego", and "I Do Love You" (as well as many more) this music is bound to inspire and move you. I'm only 16 yet this music greatly appeals to me. Hence, it will appeal to anyone! (In theory). Ringo Starr and Stevie Wonder have played a part in this album too - so perhaps that shall gain it a wider audience! Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars A c.d. of two halves, 22 Feb 2001
Having had an LP copy of Keepin' the Summer Alive from 1980 I knew what to expect from the first 10 tracks. Typical Beach Boys from the late 70's,upbeat songs like the opening title track and School day,to the lovely ballads of Oh Darlin',and the Bruce Johnston Endless Harmony. However when it comes to the second half of this two for one CD the self titled Beach Boys lp it would appear that they were fast running out of ideas.Apart from the opening song Getcha Back all the other tracks were new to me.The rest of the tracks on what would have been the A side of the LP are very American 1980's music style. However the track California Calling is a throw back to the Beach Boys mid 1960's music. After this it would appear the Brian Wilson influence comes to the fore as the last few tracks are pleasant enough and is more in keeping with the Beach Boy sound.Overall as a record of the last throws of the Beach Boy era this is a good compilation if not the best work they ever did

3.0 out of 5 stars Keeping The Summer Barely Alive?, 9 Sep 2000
By A Customer
These are in many ways the last two albums which deserve to called beach boys albums and for that alone we should be thankful they are available once more.

Keeping The Summer Alive, although containing five tracks written or co-written by Brian seems lacklustre, certainly there are no major compositions on show here although the title track and a couple of others are catchy enough.

The self titled 1985 album which accompanies Keeping The Summer Alive on this 'Twofer' release is certainly better. 'Getcha Back' is a nostalgic slice of 'beach boys' pop and 'Where I Belong' is a wonderful ballad beautifully sung by Carl. The production is a little too eighties in places and the lyrics at best don't get in the way, and at worst are incredibly banal.

Overall an enjoyable effort for fans of the band although fans of Brian Wilson may decide to steer clear.
