Synopsis

Bobby lives with his widowed mum and step-father who believes him to be a schoolboy. Desperate for him to keep this secret his mum agrees to meet her late huband's best friend in a seedy music hall. Unfortumately Bobby has dragged his step-father to the same venue...

'Those were the days' is seldom mentioned in lists of Will Hay classics but in my opinion it is a real gem. Based on Pinero's 'The Magistrate' Hay gives a wonderfully warm performance in the title role and is ably supported by the most youthful John Mills performance you are ever likely to see. Excellent British character actor performances abound, and there is a marvellous recreation of an evening spent in a Music Hall. Veteran music hall stars Lily Morris and Harry Bedford give their all on stage and there is an extraordinary evocation of Little Tich's 'Big Boots' dance...never seen it? Believe me the video is woth purchasing for that alone. A lovely 'lost' British comedy classic.
