4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy adaption of a Dickens classic, 28 Jan 2002
By C. Jarvis "crisso" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following within a year of David Lean's masterful adaption of 'Great Expectations' it was inevitable that this Dickens adaption would be compared. It was and came up lacking which is a shame because I think it stands quite well on it's own. The casting is superb (especially Cedric Hardwicke as the scheming uncle Ralph) and director Cavalcanti successfully creates an authentic Dickensian mood. The film has been criticised as being too hard to follow as the result of the story being compressed into the 104 minute running time. I think I managed to follow the story alright (although I have never read the book so I am hardly in a position to comment) and was very satisfied with the end result and maybe it's not up there with David Lean's films (Lean's successful adaption of 'Oliver Twist' was released the following year) but I think it's still a worthy adaption of a great story.
