5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and economical present, 29 Oct 2000
The two discs are an absolute joy to own and would make a wonderfully economical and treasured present for any classical music lover. The Cleveland Orchestra conducted by their regular director music, Christoph Von Dohnanyi, have made a wonderful studio recording of Brahms first two symphonies and the two overtures which brings off these lyrical and exciting works of the Romantic period to perfection.

Studying the D major Symphony No.2 with the score reveals that every note is played (!), and can be clearly heard, whether in the strings, wind, brass or timpani. All instruments have the distinct and clearly recognisable timbre which we have come to expect with CDs, are beautifully played and, of course, are perfectly in tune. The changes in dynamics are as spectacular and dramatic as Brahms would have wanted.

Dohnanyi takes the famous lullaby theme and its development in the sonata form first movement at a leisurly and expansive pace, in comparison with other recordings I have listened to (19:55) This agrees with concert with Brahms' allegro non troppo marking. One's enrapture in this long movement is maintained by the lyrical playing of the wind in particular The haunting melodies and their ABA treatment in the B major second movement are taken a little faster than usual (8:59) without detriment, with effortless changes of meter from 4-4 to 12-8 within the adagio non troppo tempo. The third movement is a rondo in E minor with the memorable allegretto grazioso oboe melody, taken up by all the other instruments in turn when the refrain repeats. The presto 'episodes' which separate the returns of the melody are played with pin-point accuracy. The D major finale, a theme with every conceivable variation, is a feast of spectacular orchestral fireworks. It is marked allegro con spirito and so it proves to be!

The Cleveland Orchestra's excellent and highly professional performance is set off by the well-designed and attractive CD cover. It could do with more information on it (I would like to see more musical analysis), but who could complain at that price for two splendid discs?..
