On 6 October 1927, the movie industry changed for ever. That was the day on that The Jazz Singer, a largely silent film with synchronised musical inserts starring Al Jolson, opened in New York. The Talkies (or Talkers as they were originally known) had arrived. In the rush that followed to make sound films, everyone churned out musicals--more than 200 in Hollywood alone by 1930. This disc features original performances from some of the most popular and important film musicals of the period 1927 to 1938. Jolson himself is here singing Mammy from The Jazz Singer. So is the phenomenally popular pairing of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy with their "Indian Love Call" from Rose Marie. Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland ("Dear Mr Gable"), Mae West ("I'm No Angel"), Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Shirley Temple--the stars of those early years can be heard together with several now forgotten names such as Cliff Edwards and Harriet Hilliard. The transfers from 78s to digital stereo by Australian sound engineer Robert Parker using CEDAR are excellent. --Richard Fawkes
