Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Terrific value, both in terms of playing time (CD 2 alone plays for more than 81 minutes) as well as artistic merit. Karajan's 1964 La Mer has long been recognised as one of the true classics of the gramophone, and Abbado's acutely atmospheric account of the Nocturnes with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is scarcely less distinguished. We stay in that city for both the gorgeous Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune (a voluptuously ecstatic performance from 1971 under the gifted young baton of Michael Tilson Thomas) and a ravishing Syrinx from the BSO's eloquent principal flute, Doriot Anthony Dwyer. And the pleasures don't end there: there's a live Estampes from the peerless Sviatoslav Richter, while the Melos Quartet of Stuttgart's version of the String Quartet can hold its own against any rival--as does a sublime, indeed inspirational rendering of the Cello Sonata from Mstislav Rostropovich with composer Benjamin Britten at the piano. By the way, it's a sobering thought to remember that the legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's crystalline, immaculately turned interpretation of the First Book of Preludes originally occupied one full-price CD on its own. In other words, if DG's selection appeals (and it certainly should), don't hesitate for a moment. --Andrew Achenbach

5.0 out of 5 stars what more could any lover of debussy, be after., 1 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
it is criminal that no one has reviewed this cd before now.
i wept through most of the first cd, because of the sheer joy, ecstasy, passion and power, of the music.
until now, i had dutoit's 'prelude a l'apres midi d'un faune', and i was more than happy with it. but tilson thomas blows dutoits version completely out of the water. tilson thomas and the flautist play the piece with such ecstasy, poetry and delicasy, as if to make other performances seem moribund.
next we are given a truly magnificent performance of the quartet, by the melos quartet, needless to say, this is second to none. such passion in the first movement, that only just stays in control, the aching beauty of the third movement, then all is released in the finale.
karajans performance of la mer has been bewitching us for forty-five years. its like a turner painting for the ear, forever casting its spell.
after all this, there's richter playing the 'estamps', michelangeli playing some of the preludes, rostropovitch and britten in the cello sonatas and abbado with the noctunes, phewww, what more could any lover of debussy, or french music in general, be after!
