A Priest's Redemption, 24 Oct 2003
The power of the (true) story of Oscar Romero is not merely in the courage of the man who became renowned throughout the world, but in his initial tacit complicity with the corrupt regime. It is a story of redemption, of a man who would not initially 'speak out for those who have no voices, stand up for the rights of the oppressed.' We watch his inner struggle, as Raul Julia in the performance of his life portrays it powerfully and with genuine emotion, as the good disciple fights the compromising priest for control. We watch the regime push him just one too many times, and bring out the irresistible force of a passionate disciple who will die for his people.Buy it, wear it out and buy it again!

A film for everybody whatever religion or culture you are, 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Although you may not be a Catholic, you can still watch the film and feel touched by it. It doesn't matter what culture, faith or what country you came from because this film is for everybody because the film wasn't limited to only Catholics. The film covers the topics of racism, prejudice, discrimination and classism. The filmis based on the Roman Catholic Archbishop/Monsignor Oscar Romero. He spoke against the government although he knew the punishment would be death. He was assainated on the 24th of March 1980. The film does show the true violence and torture of the government and what happened to those who supported what Romero was doing. But Romero was not afraid. He fought a battle without using violence but instead he used his courage to speak of love and peace. Raul Julia who plays Romero is a wicked actor and he suits the part of Archbishop. I saw this film in school, but I don't think it will be the last time I see it. I recommend it to everyone. Romero's legend wasn't just for the Salvadorian people, but it was for everyone. Things like this don't just happen in El Salvador, it happens all over the world. Oscar Romero was and still is a disciple of Jesus and a man devoted to God's teaching of peace. A man who loved all Salvadorian people. Brown or white, rich or poor, his killer, those who killed and his people, which is all Salvadorian people, past and present.

ROMERO - Impact, 5 Dec 2005
Having seen Romero when it first came out at the cinema, I have never forgotten the impact it had on the audience. The people were happy and talkative on the way in, on the way out you could see that everyone of them had an AHA moment, they were quiet and thoughtful.I never knew how much man's inhumanity to man still impacted on individuals, families and society. It was also impactful to see how one man, who happened to be under estimated by his peers and the society he was living in could make such a major difference. It is obvious that the man, Romero, struggled with academia and with the things he saw. He was willing to challenge, although this happened after he had seen suffering and death including his friends.I wondered if I had been in his situation, if I would have been as courageous to change the world and to give his final message, "I know that one day they will come to kill me, but I say to you I forgive them", it seems to me that Romero knew his fate however he was inspired by the needs of others and his own faith. The film makers were not afraid to film and to shoot the awkward pictures and Raul who played Romero was such an excellent and powerful actor. The inflections he managed to use were incredible. For me this remains one of my all time favourite movies and one of my heroes too. David Rawcliffe
