Philip Pickett has taken the title of this album in the broadest sense and produced a charming compilation, not just of Shakespearean song-settings, but also of music either mentioned in the plays or known to have been played before or after performances. Thus, along with a couple of settings of "Where the Bee Sucks" and "O Mistress Mine", we are also given renditions of the rather ribald ballads "Watkins Ale" and "The London Prentice". This variety is also present in the instrumental numbers: the tender melancholy of a virtuoso lute-duet arrangement of Greensleeves is contrasted with some breathtakingly energetic improvisation in the jolly "Sellinger's Round", for example. The sopranos all have the clear, boyish trebles which have come to be associated with this style of period performance, and though the sound is never less than beautiful, the lustier numbers could benefit from a more lubricious, full-bodied attack. That said, the ensemble items are impressive, the acoustic is intimate yet kind, and overall one is left with an impression of the glorious wealth of melodic invention in music of this period. --Warwick Thompson
