Product Description

CD Description

Upon this album's release in 1965, Bob Dylan must have feltpretty good about himself. Odetta, one of the most indelible performancers of the folk revival (and the original inspiration for Dylan's embracing of folk), turned the tables and embraced him back. While Dylan was already the epicenter of the folk world (and was soon to leave it entirely) and therehad already been a spate of Dylan covers released, ODETTA SINGS DYLAN was the first album devoted entirely to the youngbard's songs. Hitched to her expressive contralto and the spry leads of Greenwich Village star guitarist, Bruce Langhorne, songs such as "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" are rendered with an expansive soul and nuanced musicality rare in their original forms. In 2008, the album was reissued with bonus versions of "Blowin' In the Wind"and "Paths of Victory".

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant, 7 Jan 2005
By zimmi710 (Australia) - See all my reviews
In a time when Compilation and Tribute CDs wash through the stores, its very refreshing to have access to this early rendition of Dylan's songs by Odetta. Not the same usual ones dragged out time after time, but including some lesser known gems from the past.
The quality of sound is superb. The interpretation of the material (except for Tambourine Man) is easy and spiritual. The simplicity and strength of her presentation belies what a force she was in her time.
This is one of my favourite all-time "Dylan" CDs and I recommend it to anyone who likes Dylan music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the original?, 11 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I've never really understood the all the fuss about Bob Dylan. I know the songs are good but his singing(?) often sounds to me like he'd rather be eating broken glass than putting the songs across. The interpretations on this album are truly beautiful. Odetta's voice is as clear as a bell and her phrasing is spot-on. The remastering gives every track full value and real depth of sound.

Particularly recommended: Long Time Gone; Blowing In the Wind. Goes on too long/made a meal of: "Tambourine Man".

4.0 out of 5 stars At the source, 14 Oct 2009
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Folk singer Odetta once recorded a song called No More Auction Block-a song about the emanicipation of slavery.
Soome time later Bob Dylan recorded one of the songs on here-Blowin' in the Wind which is possibly his most famous one.
For this song he appropriated the melody of No More Auction Block so it seems a nice touch that Odetta should record the song!
Dylan frequently borrowed existing melodies and passed them off as his but many were PD.
Perrsonally I love copying. After all P F Sloan wrote the greatest protest song of all when he studied songs like The Times They Are A Changing and A hard rain's gonna fall-this latter adapted from a folk song called Lord Randall.
Eve Of Destruction is a song that hangs in the air-the greatest song Dylan never wrote.A song which makes life better by knowing its there and that its sentiments are more relevant today than ever
