Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Florestan Trio takes its name from Schumann's more extrovert and passionate alter-ego: "Florestan" and the poetic, introverted "Eusebius" symbolised to the composer the two opposite poles of his own personality. Here, this award-winning British trio is on its spiritual home territory, and the result confirms it. The ensemble seems to relish every element of Schumann's romantic yet often whimsical expressive language as the three subtly convey the layered darkness, fantasy and passion of the late and somewhat tortured G minor Trio. The more rarely heard Fantasiestücke are likewise played with great empathy and beauty of tone, and the Piano Quartet finds the group augmented by Thomas Riebl, who fits into this well unified ensemble as if he works with them every day. This is pure and balanced Schumann--there are no extremes of tempo, which some musicians do adopt in this composer's music to hint at the psychosis to which he later succumbed. The slow movements are taken not too slowly, so the melodies may be full-blooded without sliding into sentimentality; the scherzo of the Quartet is light and ghostly rather than sacrificing atmosphere to excessive rapidity. And the group's affection for its namesake shines out at every turn. A disc to play, enjoy and replay time and again. --Jessica Duchen
