Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Welcome to hip-hop originality. On Wyclef Jean's The Ecleftic, his beats-beyond-borders ideology, seen on the Fugees' The Score and his own Carnival, shines bright. Rap's renaissance man, he's pushing hip-hop forward with his musical vision. Firmly rooted in an inclusive old-school aesthetic (recalling Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa) he's got Kenny Rogers and Pharoahe Monch sharing space on a dub plate; Youssou N'Dour guests on the indignant, powerful "Diallo"; and Mary J. Blige joins Wyclef for the mournfully beautiful duet "911". Though there are many musical flavours on The Ecleftic, Jean's deft musical arrangements prevent them from descending into tokenism. But at the end of the day, there's no doubt that this is hip-hop, with taut tracks like "Thug Angels", "However You Want It", and "Pulling Me In" showing that Wyclef's holding it down for the heads, some of whom felt that his Carnival was a little too poppy. The Ecleftic contains enough anger and righteous indignation to be real hip-hop, and enough humour and musical magic to be fun. --Lizz Mendez Berry

2.0 out of 5 stars If you like Perfect Gentleman and 911......, 6 Sep 2001

... then get them on a compilation album. I'm afraid that if you're attracted by Wyclef's fantastic and original voice then these (and perhaps Diallo) are the only tracks where you get to hear it. The rest is definitely hip-hop territory. I'm sure if you're into that it's a superb album, but if you're looking for something different it's a let down. The two 'dub plate' tracks sound exactly like Ali G, only he's taking the p***! In my opinion a huge waste of a huge talent and my most disappointing album buy for many years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wyclef. You've done us proud, 15 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This album is very good. I like it especially because it has a mixture of many different sounds. I've found that with quite alot of hip hop albums i've bought they have all sounded the same and each artist doesn't seem to have a percific sound. But Wyclef has. There are lots of tracks but quite a few are skits Skit: Columbia Records, Red Light District, Whitney Housten Dub plate, Bus Search, But these introduce the next song. There are some songs that stand out like, 'Perfect Gentleman', 'Something About Mary', 'Thug Angels', 'However you Want', and 'Diallo' (which is 7mins long). This album is quite hard hip hop and can tkae some getting used to. Don't listen to it once and think, "This is Rubbish, listen to it three or four times. If you like perfect gentleman then you will like this album but the rest of it isn't like perfect gentleman. If you like Gone 'till November of Wyclefs first album, 911, and It Doesn't matter then you'll like it because this album is like that. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars As eclectic as the title suggests - Clef at his most diverse, 3 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I love this album, once again Wyclef Jean has hit all the right buttons and created a brave, upbeat and frankly damn cool album. The Ecleftic is perhaps slightly harder than the fantastic Carnival (Wyclef's first album) It is more like the fugees gritty first effort Blunted on Reality but still displays Wyclef's incredible diversity. There are really original collaborations with WWF's The Rock, Mary J Blige, Kool and the Gang and Kenny Rogers which help carry off the mix of country, funk, street and rock in an exciting hip hop fusion. Controversial as usual, there are thinly veiled attacks on the NYPD (Diallo)and the other fugees (Where fugee at) and the violent nature of gangsta rap (Dirty South). The Haitian connection is played down, with all the tracks in english. The album's harder style means it lacks some of the more melodic nature of The Carnival but Clef is a master the catchy hook and the singles Perfect Gentleman and It Doesn't Matter prove that the former fugee is back on top, crowd pleasing form. His break away from the harder elements of hip hop music may have given him the label of a sell out, but The Ecleftic pushes Hip Hop's boundaries in the most original way, whilst promoting a positive life message that is sometimes lacking from Gangsta rap. Check out There's Something about Mary for a dose of Wyclef comedy, 911 for Wyclef at his most soulful and Wish You Were Here for the bravest Pink Floyd cover ever!
