4.0 out of 5 stars The Way They Were - Totally Incredible, 7 Feb 2001

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's great to see this film (once thought lost forever) widely available again. Originally planned for the BBC "Omnibus" programme, it only had a limited cinema release as even in the early Seventies, the Incredible String Band were something of a minority interest: even loyal fans had been sorely tried by the surreal parable "U" and the glory days of "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" seemed long gone. What we get here though, is a wonderul testament to an extraordinary band: some early concert footage (Robin and Mike telling the story of Noah and the Dove, a bit of "Mercy I Cry City" and some tasty duelling guitars on "See All the People), a couple of excellent studio tracks ("All Writ Down" and the majestic "Iron Stone"), some very amusing "of-their-time" interviews and a totally hysterical "fable" in fancy dress with rubbish props. Its all quite amazing, Incredible in fact. Well worth getting if you recall the String Band with any degree of affection - The Iron Stone alone is worth the price of the video - but essential for their ever-growing league of fans.
