Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is back with a vengeance. The 18-certificated game that has tried so hard to give gaming culture a bad rap has come to the Dreamcast.
In a transfer that is virtually identical to the previous versions on both the PlayStation and the PC, you play a lone gangster set on numerous missions to complete dodgy tasks.
Whilst missions range from being a driver in a diamond heist to delivering drugs to a neighbouring gang, the game has been designed in such a way that fun can be had from just driving around the city. Steal a taxicab and you'll be able to pick people up and earn money whilst doing it. Alternatively you can go and steal cars then sell them to one of the many scrap heaps around town.
Stealing a car in front of the police however is not a good idea and will incite a chase, and with increased AI (Artificial Intelligence) over the first version, they will try everything to hunt you down. If this fails, and you evade the police however, then the FBI in their black Transam--Men in Black style --will come out. If they fail to stop you, the streets are cleared and the National Guard are brought out--not a pretty sight.
Although not the most beautiful game in the world, and one that certainly doesn't take advantage of the Dreamcast's power, this game is great for letting off some steam at the end of the day. Filled with little details, the game can give you hours of fun without actually playing the missions. Yes it is just a straight port from the PlayStation and PC versions, but if you haven't yet got either of these titles in your collection then it's a worthwhile investment.--Stuart Miles

This may be the video game your mother warned you about. Rather than being penalised for each innocent pedestrian you hit, you are rewarded in Grand Theft Auto 2. Like its predecessor, the game is viewed from a bird's-eye perspective, and you play as one of the little people in a vast futuristic city. The object is to prove your mettle to warring gangs by car-jacking innocent victims, assassinating rivals, stealing drug shipments and completing assorted other missions. But if you are not the type to take orders, you can do anything you want, thanks to the game's loose, non-linear structure. For example, you can commandeer a bus and take it along its regular route--the passengers will pay the fare without noticing anything different. But if you decide to plough the bus through the side of a building--and you know you eventually will--they will start jumping out of the windows. And because you are hopping from vehicle to vehicle, you get a good sampling of the city's radio formats--everything from techno to top 40, classic rock to country. Be sure to keep moving, though--the cops will always be on your tail.
