Amazon.co.uk Review

The Die Hard movie trilogy offers viewers plenty of action, thrills, and witty one-liners; unfortunately, Fox Interactive's computer game sequel, Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas, lacks the excitement of its movie inspiration. At least the plot is consistent with the movies: NYPD Detective John McClane has once again stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time. First it was a corporate office building at Christmas. Then it was a terrorist-packed airport. Now it's a prison riot.

Die Hard Trilogy 2 features three different game modes with some occasional moments of enthralling gameplay--though none of the modes stands out as a shining example of its genre. In the third-person action-adventure mode, players control John McClane through dark, tight corridors as he battles aggressive bad guys with an assortment of weaponry, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and grenades. The sharpshooting mode emulates the gunplay found in arcade games such as Time Crisis and Virtua Cop: players glide crosshairs around the screen and blow apart enemies, tables, and walls. Finally, Die Hard Trilogy 2's extreme driving game puts McClane behind the wheel on the Las Vegas strip.

Die Hard Trilogy 2's diverse game modes ensure there's something for nearly every action gamer. But the fun can't match recent PC action titles, and the game doesn't approach the excitement of the movies. Still, if you're looking for an action title with a decidedly arcade game feel (not too complex, with simple gameplay), then check out John McClane's latest heroic adventure. --Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Diverse game styles keep the action interesting
  • Based on the highly popular Die Hard movies starring Bruce Willis
  • Movie mode blends story line and cut scenes with driving and shooting action
Cons:
  • Doesn't excel in any one game mode
  • Visuals not up to par

3.0 out of 5 stars Die Hard Trilogy 2 Review, 11 April 2001
By A Customer
This game obviously did not live up to the hype that I read in magazines, but it is till worth giving it a go. I bought the original on PlayStation, and was pleased with the difficulty being not too hard, & not too easy, and also the variety. I got this sequel for my birthday, and noticed how well presented it all was, with OK graphics. The playability was good and for the first few plays of the shooting section I had got stuck. The adventure section I had not got past the first level, as although they had put effort into the detail, it was hard to see what was going on. The driving I easily completed, and so the game was difficult to rate in my mind. It is a good buy for "die-hard fans"(!) of the trilogy, but otherwise it could sit gathering dust on your shelf, like it is now for me after the purchase last September.
