Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

3D Landscape Professional is a complete garden design package. Introduced by TV gardener Monty Don, it comprises four separate modules each of which cover a different aspect of getting your garden precisely how you want it. The garden design tool comes with its own online design guide that includes hints and tips on things such as preparing the site, choosing plants and improving the soil. There are even walkthroughs to help you with practical projects from building stairs to making raised beds. There is plenty of hard information on hand to help you get things just right, and you can generate a 3-D walkthrough of your designed garden to get a real feel for it.

This designer is accompanied by another tool, Photo LandDesigner, which you can use to import a digital photo of your own garden. Among the features on offer is the ability to put plants from the plant database into the photo, and then see how they will look in the future, giving you an idea of how your current plot, and changes you want to make, will alter over time.

The third module in 3D Landscape Professional is 3-D Deck, for people who want to get into the latest trendy thing and include a deck as part of their garden. And, of course, there is a plant database with 4000 plants you can select using criteria such as flower colour, bloom season and sun requirements.

There are many garden design applications on the market, but this is definitely one of the easiest to use and most informative. A larger plant database would have been nice, but at least you can add your own favourites to it if they are not already there. --Sandra Vogel

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be much better, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
I found this product to be disappointing. It's really made for the American market. Most of the building and texture options like brick, wood and fences do not include the most commonly used British materials. The biggest glaring error in that department is the "backgrounds" - open fields, mountain sides, and American sea shore... Although the description says that the program uses layers - it is not the type of layers used in most graphic programs. Meaning you can't make layers for some objects and be able to switch them on and off to see the appearance of the garden without a patio or certain plants. This program is also very limited in its options for landscaping. Ex. We have a raised patio with a pond in its centre in our garden and there is no way to depict that in this program.

The description is also misleading that it does allow the import of digital images, but does not allow you to map your digital image onto a 3d shape. Where you can import images is a separate program that is only 2d and lets you paste objects on top of the image.

It is cute. Not too difficult. Ok for showing big changes, shadow falls and new plants over time. But not what I would call up to "professional" standards.

I was also severely unimpressed by the company's web site.

2.0 out of 5 stars Superficially impressive, 16 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I found the title 'professional' to be quite misleading as I tried to use the program as a garden designer to produce plans, but frankly found it to be full of bugs. I spent a long time listing these to the company as the idea is good but just got a fob off. A revised version came out with virtually nothing fixed. I also forwarded my comments to Monty Don c/o the Observer but received no reply.

It's ok for people who want to dabble but really the name professional is a bit of a joke.

4.0 out of 5 stars user friendly, 21 Sep 2001
By mrs Jules langford (north bedfordshire. uk) - See all my reviews
the software enabled me to plan and put into action the planting of my borders, and moving of small structures to improve the appearance of my country garden. The only criticisms i have are, my jack russell is represented by a labrador, my pig is unrecorded and my chickens are represented by flying ducks on sticks. I enjoyed the software immensely and would reccommend it to others, if only for the fun side of building a garden. It worked for me and i'm a dinosaur with software.
