Product Description

Product Description

Under the guise of the Aphex Twin, Cornish-born techno auteur Richard James has produced few things that normal folk would consider classics. Classics--a collection of early singles, remixes, and rarities--merely provides more evidence that Aphex revels in operating on the fringes of acceptable listening material. The tampon advert-sampling industrial gabba of "Tamphex (Hedphuq mix)", and the galling, distorted abstract techno noise of "Phloam" make the bulk of Classics an occasionally uncomfortable listen, but bookended as they are by recorded and live versions of Aphex's best early work--the dark, fleet-footed "Digeridoo"--and occasionally interspersed with devilishly good proto-ambient interludes like "Analogue Bubblebath 1" and "Polynomal-C", such aural obscenities are a necessary evil. Some of Classics documents the work of rave culture's most progigious legacy. It all demonstrates that when you're dealing with someone as contrary as Aphex Twin, there's proof in the adage that genius is pain. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, 4 Aug 2004

Bizarre. Almost inaccessible. Great.

The first time I listened to this was through headphones in the street. The most remarkable booming moved in over the top of Isopropanol and I thought "Blimey these headphones are good."

It was a train going past... Only with Aphex Twin can you mistake a train three feet away for music.

Unique.

If you love your HARD techno then get this. This can be very 'GRITTING TEETH' stuff but i really was blown away.If like me you love you music any style then you will want this.I've read some of the reviews here where some people say it may be hard listening. So when i was thinking of buying this i was a bit wary (i knew what to expect but was still a bit unsure),but i thought what the heck go for it.I'm glad i did i absolutely love this now.You can imagine this going down a storm in the techno clubs. This guy,at the time of these recording was(and still is!)ahead of his time. This is a real breath of fresh air, what with all the 'Pumping Trance/Hard House'getting very very boring at the moment.Oh and by the way,it sounds great in the car as well.JUST BUY IT!!

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll either love it or hate it. (Most will love it), 9 Jan 2001
Upon sliding the disc into my machine i was presented with the track Digeridoo which started out with cheesy synth effects authentic to the title...and then the beats, which are to say fantastic and best enjoyed on full volume. They say that the dj has a computer set up to write tracks using the noises he makes when he sleeps like his heart and it shows in the later tracks. If you hear random noise at the beginning of a track i guarantee a pumping drumline will be iminent. It needs afew listens to wear it in and some will dismiss it, but stick with it and you'll begin to appreciate the intricate detail in all the blips and squeaks (reminds me of The Two Lone Swordsmen). Those who do will have a valuabe entry to their collection if you just accept the wierdness. To put is short, buy this or miss out!
