Under the guise of the Aphex Twin, Cornish-born techno auteur Richard James has produced few things that normal folk would consider classics. Classics--a collection of early singles, remixes, and rarities--merely provides more evidence that Aphex revels in operating on the fringes of acceptable listening material. The tampon advert-sampling industrial gabba of "Tamphex (Hedphuq mix)", and the galling, distorted abstract techno noise of "Phloam" make the bulk of Classics an occasionally uncomfortable listen, but bookended as they are by recorded and live versions of Aphex's best early work--the dark, fleet-footed "Digeridoo"--and occasionally interspersed with devilishly good proto-ambient interludes like "Analogue Bubblebath 1" and "Polynomal-C", such aural obscenities are a necessary evil. Some of Classics documents the work of rave culture's most progigious legacy. It all demonstrates that when you're dealing with someone as contrary as Aphex Twin, there's proof in the adage that genius is pain. --Louis Pattison
