"fUSED is a thing of beauty"

Album Description

"Fused", is a masterpiece, mixing traditional with trance and fusion. The collection of some of Mike's favourite tunes as well as some brilliant self-penned tracks has been described as one of the most ground-breaking folk albums of all time, redirecting the future of traditional music. The album boasts contributions from some of the leading lights in Celtic music, including Capercaillie's Donald Shaw with Alan Kelly and Dezi Donnelly, who by now had been crowned 1999 Young Traditional Musician of the Year. The album also features the guest vocals from Karan Casey and Capercaillie's Karen Matheson.

Combining various musical styles and instruments, including trumpet and saxophone with tablas, bamboo flute and electric guitar, "Fused" could not have been more appropriately named. The man who Mike is often described as being the Celtic version of, DJ Talvin Singh, also contributes samples to form an end result that is a stunning cycle of instrumentals blending jungle and hip-hop beats with jazz, Asian and Celtic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars It gets better and better, 15 Sep 2001
I first became enthralled by Michael McGoldrick's playing when I heard him play in the final of the BBC Young Tradition contest. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Now some time later he is playing better than ever. The arrangements are superb - the sound is first class. What is really worth noting is the quality of Mikes's own tunes. Try playing them yourself and see how inventive they are. See how different they are from traditional tunes while at the same time feel how similiar they are. Top Notch!

This album features Micheal playing at his best! The uplifting tunes are just fantastic and he has done so much with the tunes in variations and ornamentation, he is a truely brilliant musician. Its a great listen, start 'til finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best funky-folky cross over album I have ever listed to, 30 Jul 2001
By A Customer
All puritans of Irish traditional music should better close their ears. But if you have an open mind for a genuine mixture of traditional flute tunes and up-beat blues, funk and world music rythms, than this is the disc for you. Mike McGoldrick is also called the Talvin Singh of Irish music - and he deserves it !
