The title of this DVD is rather misleading. This is an introductory presentation of some of debatable "Golden Voices of the Century": "An introduction to the Art of Singing" and not "The Art of Singing". Although I do appreciate seeing some footage that I was not aware of, I am left with a need of a further 5hrs minimum of more insight about each singer.Perhaps the intention of the producers was only to wet my appetite. What this film relies on is drama. And its choice of singers is based on drama only. There is very little mention of particular techniques used by singers.
What is delightful however is to be able to see most footage of any arias or Lieder in full. Perhaps better commentary, more technical information and more personal anecdotes would have produced a more exciting and enriching DVD.
I suppose this would make a great birthday or Christmas gift, but I wouldn't recommend it for any connoisseur.

A wonderful production for students of singing. If you want to feel a part of something bigger and more historic watch this then discuss it with your singing teacher (providing that your teacher is over 50 and does actually know who these singers are). The footage of Bjorling and tebaldi is fantastic, notice how bored bjorling looks when tebaldi is singing! Camp performances were the norm back then as Martinelli and Schipa prove. Above all you can listen and watch the finest singers of the recording era do waht we can only aspire to do. Don't buy this to improve your singing. Buy this to improve your art.
