Be prepared for surprises - this film is about far more than dancing, despite the title and main photograph on the DVD holder.
The film tells a moral tale about maturity and the abuse of power, at the levels of the both the individual and the state. It is full of ideas - in the plot, words, music, dance, colour and space. Immigration to Buenos Aires, decades of tango, the murders of Argentina's junta period and personal passions are woven together.
On a small screen, some may find the subtitles slightly on the small the side - which is a pity, because although the film is not dialogue-heavy, you do need to know what the actors are saying to each other. The English translation is good.
The film is brilliantly made and rewards more than one viewing.

This is a masterpiece - it isn't a simple film about tango, but a film with a complex plot and a twist at the end. It is also amazingly energetic (thanks to the tango theme and the great dancers in the cast), brilliantly colourful and a musical feast. I can't believe the 'less than gushingly positive' reviews I have read on Amazon! For me, it is an art installation piece, a political manifesto, a thriller - poetry on film. Buy it, treasure it and share it with your intelligent and politically sound friends!

This film is not for the faint-hearted. It whirls in much the same way as the dancers and is utterly hypnotic. The Argentine civil war is portrayed with great emotion through the dance, passionately brought to life by the character of the director. His evolving relationship with a dancer is yet anther skein of the story that Saura weaves (for the most part) successfully into the film. The colours are fantastic and the movement beautifully fluid, making it difficult to not be completely mesmerised by the entire film. It is both full of ambiguity and complicated, but thoroughly and totally entrancing.
