Product Description

Product Description

Blockbuster action-packed comedy about a streetwise convict who teams up with a cantankerous cop to track down two cold-blooded kill ers.

From the Back Cover

Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy make on of the most unusual an entertaining teams ever in Walter Hill's roller-coaster thriller, 48 Hours. Nolte is a rough-edged cop after two vicious cop-killers. He can't do it without the help of smooth and dapper Murphy, who is serving time for a half-million dollar robbery. This unlikely partnership trades laughs as often as punches as both pursue their separate goals: Nolte wants the villains; Murphy wants his money and some much-needed female companionship. Watch for Murphy's hilarious scene in a redneck country-western bar - you'll want to see it again and again.

t's the chemistry between Nolte and Murphy that makes this work, plus the fact that both men really attempt to 'get into the skin' of their character, something mostly ignored in other examples of this genre. Director Hill knows he's got a great team in front of the camera, and all that remains is for him to incorporate some spectacular action sequences around them. This he does competently. That one-two punch is what gives the movie its fireworks.

The banter and situations concerning the characters are also gleefully un-PC. It'd be interesting to see what a studio and director would make of the same premise in these 'enlightened' times. Murphy's comic stage persona is less restrained here than it would be in later films, and the results are often shamefully funny.

Don't expect Shakespeare, there's far too much cursing and other unsavoury shenanigans going on for that; do expect a pacy and entertaining early example of the 'buddy thriller'.

Before I purchased this film, I had seen a few of Eddie Murphy's more recent films like Dr Doolittle 2 and The Nutty Professor. Of course, when he voiced the character of Donkey in Shrek 2, he was still amusing as he has always been, but now he's performing as a family man.
48 Hrs is a far cry from anything that Murphy has done recently. This is his debut on the big screen after doing stand-up, and it's actually possibly one of his best performances. Alongside Nick Nolte, 48 Hrs simply tells the tale of an unlikely partnership between cop and crook as they try to capture two vicious cop killers.
The characteristics of Nick and Eddie are completely seperate here as Murphy provides a brash, smooth talking dapper attitude towards Nolte's more rough-edged personality. But amazingly they work perfectly together, and although they don't get along at first in the film, you notice the chemistry between them getting stronger as the movie progresses.
Featuring such classic scenes as the redneck western bar, 48 Hrs is a highly entertaining thriller. Worth purchasing indeed.

If you have not seen this film then you are in for a treat.

In retrospect the eighties were a golden age for action films. This is the film that launched Eddie Murphy, paired with Nick Nolte, with Walter Hill directing. To my mind, none of them have since bettered their work on this film. A lot of the dialogue was improvised, but this was Murphy at the his very best, fresh from Saturday Night Live, with a smart mouth and big attitude, this is a film packed with classic lines that can make you laugh out loud.

It is probably the original template for the mismatched buddy comedy action film.

However a million tired retreads do not detract from just how sharp and punchy this original actually is. There are 48 uses of the 'f' word, the violence feels real, the humour is edgy and funny.

By modern standards it is understated, no helicopters knocked out of the air with cars, a modest body count, but what is on screen is well filmed, and the action makes you wince. This is an era before CGI, before wire work, it would be great to see more directors going back to making films this good again.

The film is an 18, there is some nudity, violence and bad language, but in they work in context. The is nothing much in the way of extras, but the trailer is worth checking out as it includes some amusing additional dialogue that is not in the film. There were probably more decent jokes left on the cutting room floor for this film than were included in a dozen subsequent films.

Murphy's first movie was a solid hit and paved the way for his wisecracking alter ego as the Beverly Hills Cop. From his first moments on screen where Murphy belts out the Police hit "Roxanne" from the discomfort of a jail cell we know were in for something brash, new and uncompromising. Nolte plays the jaded, tough as nails cop who gets Murphy released for two days in order to track down some former associates who've become cop killers. Solid direction from Walter Hill along with a quick witted script and exciting action scenes makes this one of the best (if not the best) buddy movies of the 80's.

Nick Nolte is fantastic as rough street cop Jack Cates. Eddie Murphy is fantastic as wise-cracking covict Reggie Hammond. The whole concept of 48 HRS is a masterpiece of cinema. This non-stop action and comedy film sees a vengeful Cates on the trail of two cop killers, and as the heat is rising, he must call in the help from the one man who knows the killers the best. Hammond. Jack wants the bad guys and Reggie wants his dirty money! It is the chemistry from Nolte & Murphy that mkes 48 HRS great fun to watch with plenty of action, humour and thrilling twists and settings! This set the trend for movies such as LETHAL WEAPON, RUSH HOUR and BEVERLY HILLS COP. If you like buddy-cop films, see the most original one ever! 48 HRS is a true classic and must be bought!

I've always been a fan of Eddie Murphy & especially Beverly Hills Cop. When I heard there was a movie done beforehand in a similar style I just had to watch it.

Although it is gritty & raw & has some amazing dialogue, I wouldn't say it was up there with BHC. It has some savage villains & a genuine on-screen chemistry between Nolte & Murphy.

It also seems to be one of those classic 'bad cop' films where the police are sharp-witted, swearing New Yorkers, but this film seems to have gotten in there before such things became cliche.

Overall, definitely worth a watch, although I happened to catch Die Hard [1989] after watching it & noticed that the 80's definitely provided many better cop movies. Can't be too bad if they made a sequel though...
