5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent all round family film, not to be missed., 22 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This film was pure magic to watch. If you love stories about relationships with dogs and also love art this film has it. It contains moments where it makes you angry, smile and shed a tear. I have never read the actual book of Dog of Flanders so I don't know how much of the story has been changed but even if it has, it is well worth watching. The acting, and the time and place the film is set in all adds to the atsmosphere and if you love drawing and painting and haven't done any for awhile it might even inspire you to get your brushes out.

3.0 out of 5 stars my favorite story, 11 Jul 2003
By yuji (Niigata, Japan) - See all my reviews
The original author is the British graduate WIDA . The tale is based on real travels around Antwerp in 1871. The main characters are the grandfathers of Nello, an old dog called Pastrache ,and Nello. The contents of this talk are the eternal friendship tales of a tender-hearted boy Nello and an old dog Pastrache. One day the grandfather is struck down sick. Therefore, in order to earn money for food and nursing for the grandfather, Nello has to go to Antwerp to find work as a milkman. One will feel the pain of Nello who supports a household economy although he is very young. These are sad days for Nello - barely surviving --his grandfather having passed away. Furthermore, the crime of having fired a windmill, which ruins Nello's business, is attributed to him wrongly, and he is rejected by the villagers too. When I thought of Nello, I thought that it was a very sad tale. Nello finally lost everything, and he and Pastrache go to the cathedral in Antwerp ...I will not spoil the ending by saying any more. This story made a big impression on me and I have remembered it ever since. I regard this story not just as being for children but also for adults as it is a masterpiece of tragedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic of a Movie!, 22 Jan 2003
By A Customer
A wonderful story, with excellent acting. The quality of film is first class, and this movie has become one of my very favourites. It is about a young boy who has an amazing talent as an artist, but who finds life difficult because he is so poor. He is helped by a locally based and well respected artist. The dog is one he finds half dead by the road, but which helps him along through the years. Wonderful performances by Jessi James and Jeremy James Kissner, who each play the boy at different times of his life.

If you are an art lover, this film will mean even more to you.

Not to be missed.
