5.0 out of 5 stars A funny, heartwarming story of friendship., 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I saw this movie for the first time at a Film Festival in Auckland, New Zealand. It was the first movie I have ever seen after which the audience broke into spontaneous applause.

The story covers friendships between many different types of people from different backgrounds, though living in the same area in France. There are some very amusing scenes in the film, including one of an hilarious frog catching episode.

In short, only the French could make a film so glorious as this. It has so many diverse characters with so many amusing traits and eccentricities. Added to this, there is a beautiful soundtrack which recurs often and hightens the feeling of sentimentality and joy.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves French cinema. It is surely one of the best, along with Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cinematic and french equivalent of Cider with Rosie, 4 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I loved this film when I saw it. It is probably largely autobiographical (sensu Cinema Paradiso) and is the account of a small girl growing up in a poor area of France by a marshland shortly after WWI. Eric Cantona, because he is famous for previous non-cinematic exploits is, at first, a bit off-putting but quite quickly he adopts the role and puts in a convincing and punchy performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Small subtitles limit viewing of WONDERFUL FILM, 13 Oct 2009
CHildren of the Marshlands is a five star film made by the FRENCH--Jacques Villeret....
The joy of the film, the story, the actors, scenery and outcomes are all retained even for the English viewer with only limited school French.

Nonetheless, small subtitles spoil the viewing for the English viewer and make the purchase of the film with small subtitles a questionable expense.

The film Children of the Marshlands continiuies as a truly wonderful film, regardless.
