Product Description

CD Description

Drawing largely from Kevin Ayers's early-to-mid-1970s heyday, this BEST OF collection finds the gleefully quirky U.K. performer indulging fully in his fascinating brand of psychedelic/prog-tinged pop. Occasionally aided by some of his former Soft Machine bandmates, Ayers offers up everything from frenetic rock (the jittery "Butterfly Dance") to lively, vaudeville-inspired numbers (the demented singalong "Clarence inWonderland"). As an introduction to Ayers's strange sonic world, this 19-track compilation is tough to top.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Big Shining Star!, 2 Nov 2006
By A. R. Dougall - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"This album is for anyone with an open mind about what music's for and how it can make you go 'Yes' on a cold morning in November! It also helps if you have a sense of humor and fun. This CD is a great introduction to the world of Kevin Ayers, packed with inventive and melodic moments and free from cacophonous wig-outs. There are a couple of less succcessful tracks and some of it is a bit dated, but so what, there are some great tunes too, often brilliantly played. it certainly doesn't deserve the verdict given by the Steve Hillage fan below. [Actually I believe Steve Hillage played on some Kevin Ayers tracks, so he at least must have quite liked the chap's stuff.] I would normally have given this CD four stars [because it doesn't have one of my favourite Ayers tracks, May I? on it] but I'll give it an extra one to redress the balance. For those who are unfamiliar with Kevin Ayers, his music is a bit like a mellower version of Syd Barrett, but with more instrumentation. In other words very good indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dis-combobobulated Delights!, 15 Dec 2002
Gloriously idiosyncratic and a synaesthetic's dream, The Best of Kevin Ayers does exactly what it says on the tin. A mobius strip of colour twists through the album ("Caribbean Moon! Yellow-Yellow!"); Colores Para Dolores is a prism through which melodic light shines both ways; 'tis beguilingly backwards-y! The acoustic avocado sounds of inspired quirkiness converse happily with Ayers' merry mercurial poetry. Xok! I am sure that the Oyster and the Flying Fish would approve of this original menu. Discover the Other, dear reader; I wonder(land) what you will dream of tonight?
