Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Whether you're planning a trip to Amsterdam and you need to know how to hail a cab or you're just looking to learn a new language in your spare time, Learn Dutch Now! 8.0 from Transparent Language is a useful tool that will help you achieve your goals.

By combining listening exercises, speaking practice and reading comprehension, Learn Dutch Now! 8.0 includes many types of different learning methods. For those who prefer to listen and learn, the programme offers reading exercises where users listen to a Dutch speaker read a word, phrase or entire paragraphs. The user can then follow along with the Dutch speaker by adjusting the recitation speed to just the right pace. Additionally, these reading exercises incorporate grammar education. The user can select any word, phrase or sentence and learn the English translation, the root of the word and the grammar function. Not only does this software teach you how the use the language, it also educates on the language's origins.

For those who believe practice makes perfect, Learn Dutch Now! 8.0 incorporates speaking exercises into the learning plan. The downside is that these speaking exercises require a microphone that does not come with the software.

While Learn Dutch Now! 8.0's total immersion approach can seem slightly daunting to the student who simply wants to learn to ask "Where is the bathroom?", the program does offer some interesting ways to pick up Dutch as a whole. As students of foreign language know, learning a living, breathing language from afar can be a little dull. For that reason, Learn Dutch Now! 8.0 incorporates language games into the programme. Users can complete crosswords and fill-in-the-blanks, unscramble nonsense words, play video games and more. If you're looking for a way to familiarise yourself with the basics of the Dutch language, including accents and inflections, this is a fun and comprehensive way to get there. --Kendra Hayden

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable learning experience., 10 April 2001
Diving straight into this course without reading a little of the "getting started" section, I thought the ammount of information in front of me was a little overwhelming. However, after an hour familiarising myself with the layout and different sections, I discovered what a well thought out course it is. Everything you need as you work is on the screen, including an unobtrusive grammer section. Even reminders and notes can be jotted down as you go. The games keep it interesting and fun and you are encouraged to move around the sections rather than using a step by step approach. I am making progress without the struggle I found with language learning in my school days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lateral learning, in-depth study possible, 24 May 2002
Cons first.
1. Poor sound quality.
2. References to English are American biased (including American spelling of English).
3. The user-interface is very confusing, almost offputting, at first.
4. No printed manual.

Now the pros.
5. You can listen to words, sentences and whole texts.
6. You can click on a word and have it explained (on screen). The program is clever enough to highlight split verbs and associated words automatically - brilliant!
7. Use of native Dutch speakers who speak at a rate you can understand.
8. There are enough words and phrases to give you a first class vocabulary.
9. Mutli-level cross references to grammar.
10. You can show / hide translations to test yourself.
11. Microphone to record yourself for analysis by the program.

Conclusion: for points 5, 6 and 7 alone this product is worth the money. If you really want to learn Dutch and are happy to find your own way around the various screens (and work out your own study routine) then buy this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive introduction to Dutch language for self study, 7 Aug 2002
By RTT007 (the Netherlands) - See all my reviews
The course is excellent. Whatever you want to start with - you are able to see the translation of one word and the whole sentence. You don't need to look in dictionary for the very first several hundred Dutch words and most popular "survival" phrases. You could also listen to the right Dutch pronunciation at speed you could understand with choices (word, phrase/sentence or whole paragraph). You could divide these self study titles in small lessons and combine with traditional writing of words and sentences. The titles "The Most Common Words in Dutch" and "Survival Phrases for Dutch" are really comprehensive introduction to Dutch language for self study. The integrated "Dutch Grammar Basics" gives the necessary minimum to understand the structure of every sentence and to complete your study.
