GuitarCoach aims to introduce the basics of fingerstyle guitar playing both to novices and existing players who want to brush up their technique. Laid out with an easy-to-use interface, it moves step-by-step through a cumulative series of lessons that deal with fingerpicking, melody and chord structure. On-screen tabulature and a video showing both right and left hand positions guide the learner through each exercise and build towards assembling a complete song ("La Bamba").
Although it's billed as being suitable for all acoustic guitars, the emphasis is on classical-style playing and not, for example, on country-style flatpicking (the examples are all played on a classical guitar, not a steel-strung acoustic). What it conspicuously doesn't do is teach you how to read music, something any serious musician will want to know. There's never going to be a substitute for learning to play a musical instrument with a good teacher who can correct your faults and give personal advice, but as a supplement to lessons with a human being, Guitar Coach is definitely a step forward from the old instructional videos. --Mark Walker
