5.0 out of 5 stars This film will have you crying with laughter., 1 Oct 2001
By A Customer
There is nothing about this film I did not like. The cast were superb and the script was incredible. This film is like a Carry-On for the nineties and will keep people laughing well into the millenium.
Prunela Scales is her usual brilliant self, playing Aunt Agnes with the air of a woman just the wrong side of the insanity divide.
Georgina Cates gives us Emily who can pout for England, and shows us a character who is both funny and sympathetic.
Sean Pertwee as George is also fabulous as well as gorgeous and Robert Portal as Cedric is just superb. The lake scene has to be seen to be believed.
This film's humour is both sophisticated and incredibly funny. I have not laughed so hard for a very long time. I can watch this film over and over again without tiring of the jokes at all. Put that together with the beautiful scenery and sets and you have a production which will never become boring.
There was not one character which let down the show, from Hudson the butler through to Horace the mad tea plantation owner. Every actor is brilliant and will have you crying with laughter. This film is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny movie!, 5 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this comedy film, which stars the brilliant Prunella Scales and the excellent Brian Glover, (in one of his last film roles). It's a clever parody of all those costume dramas that the British film industry churns out. There are some great moments! Watch out for a naughty scene involving a statue! This is a great film which seems to have been overlooked. I don't remember it getting much of a cinema release. Anyway, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good laugh!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Why is this gem so badly distributed and not on DVD in the UK?, 22 May 2009
By J. Brunner (Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have lived abroad for the last few years. The only thing I miss about the UK is one rainy afternoon in Bath, a year before getting married. A male friend of the family and I wandered into a small cinema showing Stiff Upper Lips, on a totally off the cuff, rainy day sort of off chance, not knowing anything about it. Our vision of the film was heavily impeded by copious tears, as we were spurred on by each others near deaths by asphyxiation as we were gorged on a feast of totally irreverent humour. Yes, the slow pace at times gives a bit of a Godot-esque, surreal flavour, and the fowl language coming from Prunella and Peter U is jarring sometimes and not very laugh out loud, but the film is a kind of unique jem for all the reasons I quote above. A last aching testament of the C20th of why it was possible to be proud to be British? This is savage, affectionate comedy that brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it, encapsulating a genius of the Brits for being proud of their accomplishments and the willingness to make fun of them as well.
I'm shocked that it is not on DVD in the UK. This must be some sort of conspiracy by Merchant Ivory. Years after I was looking in video rental shops in vain for this endearing flick. Why was this? Anyone help with this mystery? Somebody put a lot of care and money and time into this flick, and there seems to have been so little effort to distribute it.
