Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
SquareSoft has always had a surefire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting storyline is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.

The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Product Description
More than a sequel to the top-selling Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII is an entirely new story, following the adventures of Squall, a young military cadet. Aided by an unusual group of allies, Squall must deal with a desperate rival, a powerful sorceress, and his strange dreams.

Set in a world where magic and technology co-exist, Final Fantasy VIII provides players with a variety of weapon, magic, and transportation options as they explore the vast game world. Maintaining the best features of its predecessor, Final Fantasy VIII allows those familiar with previous games to easily adapt to the battle, menu, and exploration controls, while providing unique story-line elements, features, and mini-games to make for a breathtaking new experience. Characters and backgrounds take on a much more detailed, realistic look through enhanced 3-D graphics and are seamlessly combined with nearly an hour of stunning computer-generated cinemas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic but watch out for the backgrounds, 20 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This is a very entertaining game, I have completed it twice so far. The game is a Japanese RPG and has a wonderful love story and adventure theme. The artwork is stunning and the music is memorable but they have cut corners with the PC release. Instead of giving you high resolution background scenery they have kept the small Playstation backgrounds and stretched them twice as big to fill the screen at 640 x 480. When your 3D characters at 640 x 480 are composited onto the low res pixellated backgrounds it does not look very impressive. This is the only thing that lets the PC release down in my opinion. It will not stop you from enjoying the game but if you are likely to be put off by this then I suggest you get the Playstation version instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, 21 Jun 2003
By A Customer
This game is truly superb. I have been playing it around 3 years and am having just as much fun on it now as I was 3 years ago. The game is an RPG, but I think it beats no. 7 and 9 hands down. The storyline is gripping and you can make your own junctioning strategies, and the battles are endlessly exciting.
Pros
----
1. Very good cinematic graphics
2. Superb gripping storyline.
3. Very real-like characters
4. Exciting and plentiful Enemies
5. Different vehicles, from cars to mobile schools to spaceships
6. Very creative junction system, and frightening GF's!!
7. VERY long adventure-like gameplay.
8. Mysterious arch-enemies...

Cons
----
1. Could be a bit quicker on the world map.
2. *VERY* addictive...

This game is well worth getting, and worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy VIII, 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This is another excellent Final Fantasy game. It branches off from the original style of FF games, such as Final Fantasy 7, but still maintains all of the best bits of FF. As usual, their is a romance, a bad guy, and a good guy. You obviously play as the good guy, a guy named Squall Lionheart (?!). Just like Cloud in FF7, he is a complete tosser, but as the game progresses he becomes more forthcoming. The game itself is very good and addictive, with excellent graphics and FMV (movies) integrated into the gameplay. There is a new magic system, which can seem quite confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it is fairly simple. There is also a new weapon system, which I personally do not find very good. Instead of simply buying weapons, you must go around the (HUGE!) world looking for 'weapon components' to make up a better weapon. The fighting is the same as all FF games, minus the obtrusive menu bar. Instead of summoning monsters by using MP (thats gone), you must call up Guardian Forces, which are very pretty. Once again, Nobuo Uematsu has provided us with an excellent soundtrack, and the music for the opening movie is stunning. In total, this is a superb game, and should be a must for any game fan (FF fan or not!). BUY THIS GAME!
