Amazon.co.uk Review

The first Dreamcast instalment in the Resident Evil series, Code: Veronica is "survival horror" at its finest. Unmatched in its ability to convey a persistent feeling of dread--and scare the pants off of you ever so often--this is one of those hard-to-put-down games that will keep you up for several nights on end.

The fourth chapter in the dark Resident Evil epic, Code: Veronica delves further into the machinations of the sinister Umbrella Corporation, once again pitting players against zombies and other horrifying mutations created by Umbrella's biotechnological viruses. Players begin the game as Claire Redfield, Resident Evil 2's college-girl-turned-zombie-killer, and later control Chris Redfield, the beefcake cop from the original game. There's more strategy required here than in the previous games, as Claire's actions have a direct impact on Chris. For example, playing a trigger-happy Claire that uses every health-restoring item in sight will call for some fancy footwork on the part of brother Chris.

While the basic game design here is largely unchanged from that of its PlayStation predecessors, Code: Veronica features many visual refinements--including exquisitely detailed 3-D character graphics, roaming camera viewpoints, and spectacular atmospheric and lighting effects--that greatly enhance the cinematic feel of the game. Equally high production values are evident in the game's excellent use of ambient and dynamic sound effects.

Upon completing Code: Veronica, players are rewarded with "Battle Game," a timed slaughterfest that can be played in third- or first-person point-of-view and has rewards all its own. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Engrossing storyline and well-developed characters
  • Cinematic Dreamcast-enhanced graphics and excellent sound effects
  • Challenging, first-rate gameplay
  • "Battle Game" greatly increases replay value
Cons:
  • Despite non-fixed camera angles, viewpoint can still be awkward at times
  • Less than perfect controls

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fear Is Back!!!, 6 Jan 2002
By Mr. Daniel Glenfield (Oxford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Critically acclaimed as the best in the Resident Evil series, RE:Veronica is genuinely scary! The high-quality visuals the Dreamcast offers are some of the best on the platform, and really add to the fear effect. There is a great challenge in the form of the usual Resident Evil puzzles and bosses etc. but also as you get other modes to play upon completion (which are both excellent and surprising!).
If you enjoyed any of the previous Resident Evil games then this is for you, no question about it. The story is refreshing, the action is top-notch, the fear is back, and the challenge is good too.

A must-buy for any Dreamcast owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best game of the series?, 28 Nov 2000
By MR T CHISNELL (Living room, his house) - See all my reviews
Anyone who has played any of the Resident Evil series, from the original gore fest of the mansion lab, through the RPD station and the sewers, up until the destruction of Racoon City and the seeming end to the T- and G-virus', will know how great these games are. Everything that was there from these games, the graphics, the gameplay, the suspense, and best of all, the zombies, has been flawlessly ported over to the Dreamcast, with not a single mistake. The story again centers around Claire Redfield, and her brother Chris. As Claire, for the first half of the game, you must escape the prison she's been put in, solving riddles and picking up more clues as to the story of the new T-Veronica virus. The latter part of the game involves Chris landing on the island fortress, and searching for his sister. The way in which you search through the aftermath of what happened after Claire left is brilliant, you think you know where you are but then are thrown off completely by something different. From the unbelievable opening FMV (the best FMV ever??) through the dark and dingy tunnels and rooms, to the shattering climax with the ultimate creation, you won't be able to put this game down until you've finished. At first I clocked up around 8 hours gameplay, then 5 hours, then 4, so there's loads to do. As for the supporting cast, well it's amazing. From the lonesome Steve, through the psycho Alfred, up to Alexia herself and one of Chris' worst enemies from previous times, they all play their part to develop more of the story, which was missing from the Nemesis game. As for the main two, well now you can see what Chris looks like in true 128-bit glory, and as for Claire, well she's never looked so attractive. Again, the acting will never win any Academy Awards, but hey, it's got to be better than the infamous "hold your fire, I'm a human!" from Resident Evil 2. To summarise, this game is one of the very best on offer for the Dreamcast, for any platform actually, and whereas it has some flaws, as all games do, it's still worth £30 of anyone's money...

5.0 out of 5 stars What the Dreamcast was built for...., 25 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This game has possibly the most rewarding game play I have experienced. The superb graphics and sound only enhance what is already an extremely addictive gaming environment. The game is hard to start with, but as you master the controls, find more weapons and solve the excellent puzzles the more addictive it becomes. If your looking for a game that will provide you with days of pleasure then you won't go far wrong if you choose this as your next purchase. Excellent release, go bash a zombie or two.
