Amazon.co.uk Review

It's surprising how, even after all this time, the original Quake doesn't lose it's appeal.

To those relatively new to the world of the first-person shooter it may look a little old and creaky with it's lo-res textures and clunky look-and-feel, but persevere for any length of time and this little beauty will pay you back in spades--what it lacks in finesse it make up for in sheer playability, and it's a cracking online experience to boot.

All of the founding elements of the FPS genre are here, spooky gothic-style dungeons, evil and twisted denizens of Hell and a fair number of dangerous weapons designed to cause more than a slight flesh wound.

Going back to Quake after a considerable time away, it's interesting to play it on a fast PC, the experience is very smooth--the game hardly inconveniences a modern hyper-fast machine and requires only a P75 (remember them?) and needs only 65Mb to install--lovely.

The sound effects and moody background sounds, provided by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails create a mood that remains ever tense throughout the romp, which is too difficult but provides enough of an experience to keep you coming back for more.

Packaged in a ludicrously large box (considering thereare only two CD cases in it), the add-on packs "Scourge of Armagon" and "Dissolution of Eternity" add hours of additional frag-tastic entertainment and the additional of Capture the Flag missions for the multiplayer experience.

Those brought up on the Unreal Tournaments and Quake IIIs may wonder what all the fuss is about when they have ultra-fast high-definition mayhem at their fingertips, but believe me, this is one FPS you really do want on your gaming shelves, even if it's only to look back in wonder at the way we used to live! --James Gordon

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake is still my favourite game., 3 Jun 2001
By Lewis Denby (Lewis's house.) - See all my reviews
Yes, that's right. I still love Quake, though I can't be sure why - I sold it last year. I really wish I hadn't but I wasn't really into shoot-em-ups when I sold it. I am now. Darn!

Quake is very scary, very creepy and very, well, good. If you're looking for a great single player game with an incredible deathmatch feature, this is for you. If you're a techno-freak who doesn't understand the appeal of older games and judges games on how good they look, don't buy this. You'll hate it. It is, in fact, the first game to appear in REAL 3D, so I don't know what you're complaining about.

The thing is, Quake doesn't need incredible graphics. It is a peice of pure magic that only games like Unreal, Half Life and Alice have come close to matching. Sure, it doesn't redefine the genre, but not many really good games do.

And, okay, the storyline is pants. You're sent to the world of Quake to destroy the evil Queen.... called... Shub Niggurath! (who happens to just sit there and let you kill her). But most of the AI is brilliant, so it does compell you, in a strange sort of way.

The mosnters and weapons are so varied over the 4 different episodes, or Dimensions as Quake calls them. Weapons range from the axe to the thunderbolt lightning gun - monsters range from the rottweiler to the awesome Shambler (who has big claws and a lightning gun on his head.)

Quake is just so good, but not without it's faults. But you'll be so hooked, you won't even notice them.

Final score: 97%. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake, 18 Sep 2000
By A Customer
One of the best action games of all time. Quake was THE game everyone was waiting for in 96. The reason is its special quake engine it runs on provides amazing graphics and smooth gameplay. Although the graphics might not be comparable with the new games coming out now, quake is still loved by serious game players. Quake offers superb surreal maps and big fat hairy monsters, so its bedtime for little kids and brown trousers time for the big kids. The wide range of weapons and beasts will keep you busy to explore and the deathmatch option will keep your friends busy at the same time.

The mission packs will encourage you more after you've completed Quake. It comes with some super souped-up guns, like the multi-rocket laucher. Also with lots more bigger and scarier monster to play with, this will be very bloody indeed.

Quake is still one of the most popular games played over the internet. Everyone has got it, so what are you waiting for? This is a game you can't miss!
