Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
A foray into the Mayan jungle can bring many a "pitfall" in this action-packed game. Pitfall--The Mayan Adventure tests the gamer at every turn with 13 levels of the mysterious Mayan worlds.

The graphics are sharp and the colourful backgrounds provide a truly hypnotic experience. Mayan spirits, ravenous crocodiles, lethal traps, secret regions and escape routes pop up on each level.

The mission is for Harry Jr to rescue his kidnapped father. By tracking an evil Mayan warrior, Harry runs, swings and skates his way until his final destiny--to meet Zakelua, master of evil. It's a journey that isn't for the faint-hearted. --Paul Munford

3.0 out of 5 stars 2D games do not always translate well to 3D, 9 Jan 2008
By Malcolm Lawn (Middlesex, UK) - See all my reviews
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Although I've not played any of them Pitfall games were apparently all 2D ie. side on platformers until this one. I have read that they introduced a number of the ideas which have now become the staple of many action/adventure games. I chose Pitfall 3D - Beyond the Jungle as my Xmas 2007 retro game after reading some above average reviews on various game sites. It was released in 1998 and so I was expecting something along the lines of it's more famous contemporaries like Tomb Raider. Although the settings are not a million miles away from those you might get in TR what I found was a much more abstract platformer filled with pickups. An even more significant diffence is that levels have clearly been designed with the same sort of thinking that would have made it work just as well in 2D. Much of what's wrong with game is due to this 2D/3D conflict. When you're just jumping left to right or up/down it works well enough. But any action requiring you to move backwards and fowards into the screen or diagonally across it is blighted by perspective and control issues. You get used to this but there are even bigger problems namely: collision detection. This can make the combat, simple though it is, ridiculously troublesome on occasions. The safe areas on platforms are often not as big as they appear whilst level 'furniture' is the opposite. What this means is that you will bump into objects and fall off edges far too often. This is not helped by a camera which although usually well placed simply doesn't give you a wide enough angle to see, let alone prepare for the quick jumps that are often necessary. This means that the gameplay is often reduced to a frustratingly slow try/die/retry formula as you learn by rote how to get through increasingly long and demanding platforming sections. There are plenty of other faults too but despite all this the game can, believe it or not, be fun at times. The level design, for all it's 2D origins, is actually pretty good giving you plenty of secret areas and even alternative routes, h
