Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A lot of gardening CD-ROMs include plant databases and typically they contain anywhere between 1000 and 3000 plants. They offer their databases as one of a range of features that more often than not include garden planning. Encyclopedia Botanica Plus is different on both counts. Its main content is its plant database, and this stretches to an impressive 10,000 entries.

The database is entirely searchable: the idea is that you can either use it as a ready reference tool for information about a particular plant, or look for groups of plants that meet specific needs in your own garden. You can narrow the plant database down by criteria such as flower colour, flowering season, sun/shade preferences, growing height and spread, plant preferred soil and plant hardiness.

You can add your own notes to plants in the database and can save selected groups or individually picked plants as lists for later referral. If plants you particularly like are not in the database, you can add them, along with digital photos. The main extra feature is a day-by-day garden journal which is on hand to help you manage gardening jobs. It is easily printed for use away from the computer. Encyclopedia Botanica Plus scores highly where usability is concerned, and has plenty of content. It would be a good addition to any gardener's software collection. --Sandra Vogel

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing better, 20 Sep 2001
By mrs Jules langford (north bedfordshire. uk) - See all my reviews
botanica plus has the most extensive library of pictures and information available. i have gained knowledge about plants i am now able to grow, that i always avoided before. The only set back is the need to return to what seems step a when entering a list. but other than that it has and will remain to be very helpful. Like having a real horticulturalist living in the same house. i would have no hesitation in recommending it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Help tips annoying, 6 Aug 2000
This is without doubt the best gardening encyclopaedia in CD ROM format that I have come across & earns its star rating due to its large database of plants (10,000) and good quality photographs (3,000).On the down side the plant finder could do better if it had a leaf shape search criteria which would help to narrow down a plant search. The annoying thing about the program is the "tool tips" that keep popping up and getting in the way of the already to small screen display, with no apparent option to turn them off,the program display size looks a bit lost on my monitor (but so do the other encyclopaedias I have). Despite these grumbles the program is excellent value for money and my other encylopaedia CD ROM's are destined to become yet more drinks coasters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Support, 13 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
I like the idea of it and after buying its I found it useful for a short time. It is very good. The Apple mac updated to os x, which I had to follow to keep up, and the Fasttrak company who only made it for macs to start with i believe stopped producing for macs. Encylopaedia brittanica didn't hold back.

It seems Fasttrak have no intention to produce for OS X/unix. I'll have to extract the data and make my own database now, or buy a Windows box and change everything else. Thanks! Glad to have helped FastTrak make their way, but I shan't be missing you. Imagine my car maker suddenly making cars for wheelbarrow manufacturer, and dropping mine within a couple of months of buying it.
