Sierra's Home and Garden Essential Selection is a duet of CD ROMs designed to help you get the best out of both the interior and exterior of your house. Both CDs are "special editions" of titles you can buy as stand alone software.
3D Landscape 2 is a garden design tool which includes both a designer for drawing up garden plans and a plant database from which you can make selections to add to your plot. There are only 1000 plants in the database, but you can search for specific ones using criteria such as preferred soil type and flower colour, and can add more plants by hand. The designer is not difficult to use, and the 3D views it creates really help bring ideas to life.
Meanwhile, Visual Home takes care of the interior of your house with over 1200 items of furniture to put into rooms you draw up using a design tool, and over 650 different design materials and colours to use on walls, worktops and so on. 3-D views of your designs can be produced so you can get a better idea of how your efforts will look in a real room.
These two titles are a good introduction to home and garden design using your computer. Neither CD-ROM is hard to learn to use, but neither is state of the art in terms of its functions. If you think you might get into this kind of thing in a big way you might be better off buying bigger, more feature-packed software from the very start. --Sandra Vogel
